Whats being over looked is our defense at the pg position. In every loss this year the oyhers team pg has killed us on the defensive end. We struggle with good athletic pgs and thats a bigger concern to me.

At this point, I still think it's worth the "risk." Sure he might not have helped last night, but he also couldn't have made it much worse I don't think. Last night's game was not an isolated event; they have been playing this way since the start of the season. I'd much rather have a true point guard out there making mistakes and learning more about his true position than a combination of out-of-position players asked to do something that might be beyond their skill set; that same combination of players that keep exhibiting the same tendencies with the same results. I like Zabo as much as the next guy, but a) he turns it over WAY too much, b) he's a defensive liability, even compared to Kell, c) he can't rebound as well as Kell, and 4) he isn't any better shooting the ball. Kell draws more fouls, plays more aggressively, and right now is a better all around player on both ends of the court.
They'll both be good eventually, but given the choice I'll take Kell. Both are going to have up & down games all season, and with most freshmen patience is key.
Like with any QB, the back-up is typically more popular than the starter, especially after a loss. IMO that's the case with Kell. If Zabo were playing the majority of the minutes I have a feeling people would be calling for Kell.
a) Zabo turns it over "way too much?" Way too much like our starters did last night? b) I'm not sure about his defensive liability vs. Kell's....Kell doesn't strike me as a lock-down guy just yet. Sure, he's bigger than Zabo but he's definitely not as fast. c) Are we sure Zabo can't rebound? It's sad to say but honestly, our guards shouldn't have to be charged with pulling down rebounds. If they can, then it's certainly a luxury, but to ask or expect any guard to get in there and rebound is generally beyond the scope of his duties. Lastly, I think Zabo's limited playing time has clouded people's judgment. Personally, I don't think he's had enough time to show what he can really do. The same thing can be said about Williams, too. I think if we're going to continue to lose the same way that we have been, I'd rather have guys get experience playing their natural positions. Lastly, I never said the two can't play together, I am suggesting that Zabo run the point and Kell play the 2.

That's fine, may cost us near term though. I'm sure he'll play over these next few games. It may cost us near term, but luckily we have a few gimme games before conference play, so we can send in the "regulars" to right the ship, if things get out of hand, no? Yeah, I expect him and Dakarai and even U'u to get some minutes over the next week and a half.

a) Zabo turns it over "way too much?" Way too much like our starters did last night? He absolutely does. 15 turnovers in 133 minutes. Kell has 12 turnovers in 243 minutes. The only players who are close to Zabo in turnovers per minute are Shepard and Chol. If you want more opportunities with Fisher, you need to make the most of the opportunities you are getting. Right now, Zabo isn't doing that.

Kell, Shepard, or even JJO shouldn't be our options at the point. These guys are scorers (minus JJO) and while Shep can occasionally handle the rock and bring it up the floor, he still gets it picked or loses the handle way too much. I'd much rather see us start to groom Zabo or even Williams to take over full-time. They're young and even though they might make mistakes early on (I don't think it could be worse than Kell and Shepard now), both are quicker than Kell and Shepard and have better handles I think. I also don't think Zabo and Williams have had the chance to really show us what they can do shooting the ball, either. Zabo is turning it over on almost 30% of his possessions. He may eventually be good, but he would not have helped last night. I bet that percentage shot way up because of the USD and LBSU games, which were horrible but one mistake just kept compounding on him and he never could get in a rhythm. Other than those 2 games I think Zabo has played very well. He's also shown he's one of the best shooters on the team (not saying much though). I'm not sure of his actual percentage and I don't care to look it up, but when he has gotten clean looks it seems like he's been hitting them consistently. I think he shows a lot of promise and is the real deal, he just needs more minutes to get used to being out there

I'm not sure of his actual percentage and I don't care to look it up, but when he has gotten clean looks it seems like he's been hitting them consistently. I think he shows a lot of promise and is the real deal, he just needs more minutes to get used to being out there His TO% is 34.5%, which basically means he turns it over nearly one-third of the time he's involved in the possession he turns it over. Kell, even with his bad game this week, is at 15.7%, which is actually pretty good overall. He didn't make 1st team all Maui for nothing.
I agree Zabo is the real deal, but so is Kell. Both are just in the learning phases, and errors are part of that. Kell is just further along & has been. If you compare the two:
- when on the floor they're both used equally (about same % of possessions; same % of shots) - Both have an equal eFG%, but because Kell gets to the line significantly more often & converts, his "true" shooting % is better - Zabo has a slightly higher assist rate (14% vs. 12%) - Kell turns it over MUCH less (as noted above) - Kell's more involved on the D-boards (not the most important PG stat & part is due to him also playing the 2, but I'd bet the Aztecs as a team rebound better when he's on the floor - Kell commits fewer fouls, and draws significantly more fouls - IMO Kell is a better help defender (both have similar % of steals)
I like Zabo's game. When he shoots it he appears to shoot with more confidence than Kell, and he's a more shifty player. Zabo's also more of a true point, but when you have WS & JJ also on the floor you have 3 guys who can initiate the offense anyway. If Zabo's Assist rate was significantly higher and/or if Zabo was more aggressive in the paint than Kell I'd also question the decision to play Kell more. But as it is, Kell IMO is further along than Zabo as a player, and should be playing more (& is). If we were a more high octane team - really pushed the ball, then I know I may change my mind. But we're not. We're an average team when it comes to offensive pace of play, and really don't need a sparkplug PG as a result.
That's not saying anything negative about Zabo. It's simply stating we have 2 very good players on our hands & one just happens to be ahead of the other. I get that they can (& do) play together, but that's a different conversation. If you want both to play, then you're saying Zabo > DP (or AQ). I'm not sure either of those are compelling arguments as well?
PS. BTW, next year I see Hemsley stepping in at the Pt and Kell sliding to DP's spot at the #2 much more often, opening the door for Zabo. But this year....

Agree with a lot of what you said, but I don't like comparing Kell to Zabo because I see them as two different positions. I love Kell and I love Zabo, I just want Kell to the starting SG and Zabo to be the starting PG. I disagree about you saying Kell is more aggressive in the paint, I think Zabo is fearless in the paint and Kell can be a little hesitant and defer too much to other less capable scorers. I like Kell as a SG more than Polee by far, and I like Zabo as a PG more than Kell as a PG. Polee got hot late last season and his stock got overbought IMO (and I said so at the time so this isn't heindsight -- however you spell that). He plays frantically and gets too excited, he seems like he plays off of pure instincts and athleticism instead of with his head (hence the TO's and bad shot selection -- which is equivalent to a TO). He plays too much "hero" ball, which sometimes works out but often doesn't. I like Polee as a 6th man, his length is helpful defensively with steals but he isn't a lockdown defender and his offensive game just doesn't cut it, but his spot up shooting is helpful when it goes in. He can't dribble though which is why he can't create for himself or drive, which hurts. He's a great spark off the bench because it allows him to relax a little before he comes in and he is certainly capable of getting hot and hitting some crucial threes. AQ is another player that should play a lot because of his offensive abilities but he's too slow to run point IMO and his vision/handles are average (so are Kell's to a degree) so I think he's better suited as a SG. Maybe Kell could shift to PG and bring AQ in for Zabo and Polee in for Winston or JJ off the bench as the first subs. There's obviously a ton of personnel combinations so I'm not going to run through all of them but this is my best case scenario to start games. I like how Zabo has been aggressive and creating things when he is in. He's had some TO's (but again, most of them came in only 2 games where he just flat out played badly and never got a feel for the game) but I rather have a PG that is willing to drive & dish/score and make the defense move rather than just passing it around the perimeter until the shot clock is below 10. I think Kell it would maximize and score a lot more points if he shifted positions. I don't want to write an essay so I'll just stop there EDIT: After re-reading that it sounded like I hate Polee, which isn't true. I just like him off the bench because he's a spark player... Like Bobby Jackson was back in the day for the Kings

Like Bobby Jackson was back in the day for the Kings Speaking of essays, here goes. : ) Kell gets to the FT line significantly more often than Zabo does. His FTrate (ratio of FTA/FGA is TWICE as high), which typically means he's a much more aggressive scorer. Some of the FT ratio are late game FT heroics, but not that much. He simply draws fouls. As for Zabo's TO's, it wasn't just 2 games. BYU he had 3 in 18 minutes; CSN 2 in 15 minutes; CSB 2 in 17. Again, not surprising for a FR, but 34% is abnormally high. Again, if Zabo's Assist rate was much better than Kell's I'd get that they were playing different roles, but they're not. Zabo is not creating more points than Kell does for his teammates.
To the naked eye - shorter/faster/more true at the position, I get the argument. But based on actual statistics I just don't see it. I see 2 very good players who play the same general role within THIS offense, and one is ahead of the other & the better overall player.
That could change. Those who tend to be behind could have more room for growth. Only time will tell.
As for Zabo to PG, Kell to SG & Polee off the bench, I can see the argument but on the surface I would tend to disagree. If you combine Kell & Zabo's statistics, and compare them to Kell/Polee's combination of statistics, it's not close. Even with Polee struggling you really don't game much in shooting %, you do gain in assist rate, but actually you lose overall because the TO% is much higher. You lose defensively & on the boards. It's hard to back that argument statistically. Mentally, which I think is your angle, maybe. Polee simply may be more effective off the bench, but then you have to weigh that vs. what it would do to him mentally to be removed from the starting line-up. Last year he went from few minutes off the bench to major minutes - a big confidence boost & it showed. This year he'd go from starter to bench, which may actually hurt his shooting %/confidence?
I'm excited to see where Zabo's game ends up a month from now, and especially next year. He could catch or even pass Kell, who knows? But right now I have a hard time making an argument for Zabo replacing Kell. AQ, yes. But not Zabo.
That's one thing I do love about this team, and one I don't. You/I - we could debate SEVERAL players starting over others because the depth is so good. That's the bonus. The downside is we really don't have a cut & dry line-up that truly has been effective - so we see a lot of substitutions, and players having good games then bad ones, etc. We lack consistency. The combination of Kell/Polee/WS/JJ/SS are playing about 34% of our possessions - the same first 4 with Chol is next at 6%. The "4 in" substitution team is next - Zabo, Shrigs, JJ, Allen & Chol (also 6%). The problem is I don't think that #1 combination has really set itself apart.
One thing which may be impacting Zabo's stats isn't his minutes but instead WHO he plays with. We don't just bring in Zabo for Kell, and leave the rest status quo. So tougher to judge. What would be interesting would be to see what our Offensive efficiency (pts/possession) & Defensive efficiency statistics are BY combination. My guess is our primary combo would have the best combined O & D stats, although I could see other line-ups being better offensively (e.g. with Chol over SS, etc.)? But again, I wouldn't expect the gap to be all that great.
What we do know is we have 2 good players in Zabo & Kell, with a lot of upside. I'll let the combinations work themselves out as I think it's hard to go wrong.

All good points, but I'm not so much of a stat guy and would rather just use the eye test... my thinking is more based on what I think the potential capabilities of our team could be based on the personnel I'm suggesting, rather than what they've actually done (since like you said, Zabo doesn't really get a chance to play with the starters and is thrown into a situation that he didn't control).. which obviously makes what I'm saying very subjective and open to people disagreeing, which I accept. Another point I forgot to make is that I think Kell playing PG is holding him back... He'd be scoring (as a result, helping our offense) a lot more if he wasn't worrying about the responsibilities of being PG in my opinion.

After what happened in Cincy, this Ball State game is going to be interesting. I have a feeling we'll see a little of Zabo and Kell on the floor at the same time so we know what that'll mean.

Yeah I think that was when they had problems bringing the ball up against Arizona's press, but that was 5 games ago. They had to have learned their lesson, but haven't had the opportunity to work together since. Maybe they haven't earned that Fisher's trust, thing.
