Break away 2 on 1, pass the ball, score....
Fish preaches being unselfish. I saw more Jamaals' out there when playing Utah & Bakersfield rather than more unselfish play like what you see in Chase Tapley (even though he's gone) & JJ O'brien.
I am sure the coaches will be addressing this. So many Aztec steals, break-aways, then turnover. Or, getting fouled & then hitting 1 of 2 free throws (on a 2 & 1 fast break).
This has got to be one of the keys for scoring better in Maui especially with the teams that will be playing there.
We need to be in that championship game with Arizona!

You do realize that Jamaal is a better basketball player than Chase Tapley and JJ O Brien are, right?

You do realize that Jamaal is a better basketball player than Chase Tapley and JJ O Brien are, right? As chase Tapley's father has said 1000x on this board, he was VERY selfish. Chase was more of a team player. The post was more directed towards players who are unselfish.

The one thing that annoys me is, on the dribble drive, it appears that the guys are not concerned with scoring as much as getting the foul call. I think the focus should only be on scoring the basket. If the lane is not there, don't force it in hopes of drawing the foul. It's nice every now and then, but when driving to the hoop the intent should be to score. I hate the wild shots just to get a call for being in the "act of shooting", and what makes it worse is that FT shooting is not a strength. Why play into one of your weaknesses?
When I coached the high school golf team I would see guys that drive it a mile and can't hit a shot from 80 yds in, yet they continue to drive the ball to where they leave themselves an 80 yd shot! You don't play to your weaknesses, lay back and give yourself a better percentage play. This is similar to drivng the lane with the intent to get a call and not the layup.

What is this "pass the ball and score" you speak of?

Unfortunately, the Aztecs may have a a few pure shooters on the team, but players not comfortable in the offense. Kell can shoot, but he is rushing his shots; Quinn can shoot, but he is not a consistent shooter; Polee is better shooting/scoring the ball in transition; Shrigley can shoot, but he is injured and also, has not shown consistency shooting the ball; Uu can shoot, but he is a walk-on; Pope can shoot, but he has not played competitive basketball for two (2) years. Zabo can make a shot, but he is a "true PG", who has to learn the College game.
Aztecs have scored 50 points in their last two games against two High School teams. CSUN was awful, Utah was terrible and Bakersfield will not WIN a game this year! Aztecs will eventually play against a team that has "arms and legs", and their DEFENSE will get tested. Yes, Aztecs defense may be their calling card, but pressing the entire game full Court wears on a players legs. And, when a player's legs are tired, players ability to shoot a jump shot is challenged
I have no problem with pressing full Court, but I would prefer trapping in the half-Court every now and then. A good/smart team can break any press! You do not break a press by dribbling the ball, it is done by passing!! Personally, I am big on ASSISTS. When you look at Aztecs assists for the last two games, it is not good. Single digit assists is not healthy for team. Last season team had low assists, but found ways to Win games. Each year is different and the ball may not bounce Aztecs way like last season. Aztecs may not get the same calls they got last season and etc..
Presently, Aztecs have struck fear in their opponents before they play the game! It is not the Aztecs current players, it is what the Aztecs have done over the last five (5) years. To Fisher's and his coaching staff credit, he has built a GREAT program! Hopefully, the new ERA of Aztecs will continue, but like each year is different, players are different.
