I often wonder how Vietnam is portrayed in college courses these days. Here's a news item that reminds us that Jeffersonian democracy and respect for human rights are not the strong suits of today's Vietnamese government.

PS: Anybody know whether the Vietnamese are still operating their "re-education" camps? Actually, if would be a good sign if there were still plenty of Vietnamese citizens needing "re-education." I'd hate to think that they are all happy with the state of human rights in their country.

I find it funny that we can have 'normal' relations with Vietnam and China but not with Cuba.

I find it funny that we can have 'normal' relations with Vietnam and China but not with Cuba. Well, I guess you won't have to worry about that anymore. Cuba is getting normalized relations without having to give up one single aspect of its police state in return. From Castro's point of view, there is one very good way to characterize this; Such a deal!AzWm

Cuba is getting normalized relations without having to give up one single aspect of its police state in return. They should give up their police state just to have normalized relations with us?! Have you picked up a copy of the internet lately? The U.S. doesn't have much of a moral high ground on the issue... I find it funny how hard Canada is laughing at us aboot this, too...

They took their lead from the French who were such great colonial masters.

They took their lead from the French who were such great colonial masters. Not really. They took their lead from Communists. Ho Chi Minh, remember? AzWm Edit: Sorry, that should have been Communists, not Dommunists.
