K5 loves AJ Smith. True story. He's a SOLID GM. True story. He sure got alot of mileage from that draft day deal....the one that Eli and Papa initiated.....trading for the consensus #2 QB in Rivers...and getting Merriman and a kicker. He's okay. I think his last few drafts have been fairly average, but I do like the Matthews pick alot.

What concerns me is AJ needs to have a yes man as his coach, so we can forget getting Cowher or Gruden after this season, when Norv is fired.
Well....IF Smith even fires him. AJ is so stubborn he may keep Norv in even if we go 7-9.

I would love to have Gruden. It's a moot point though as there's no way the Chargers miss the playoffs this year.

Perhaps you disagree. Cowher made a Super Bowl before winning it in appearance two, and his teams were perennial contenders for the most part. I think he is a great coach. Not Top 10 all time, thats for sure, but he can coach and has a track record of hiring good assistants......many of his ex aides went on to a head gig.

McNeil is needed, I hope he's in shape. Dombrowski has been a weak link.
As for the coaches, Cowher, Gruden, and others out there know how to generate passion and desire to win. Turner may be a good technician, but displays all the passion of a crumpled up brown paper bag.
The Raiders won the game Sunday because they wanted it more than the Chargers, not because they are more talented - they're not.
Except for maybe Bobby Ross, the Chargers have not had a really fire-it-up inspirational coach since Coryell.

And poor coaching. Norv is a standout OC. That is how he got his rep (Cowboys OC during their early 90's super bowls). I just don't think he is a very good head coach. Just my take. Doesn't mean I am right, and you're wrong....its just how I see it.

I'm really interested to see how he responds to the continued poor play of the special teams. I know Crosby is a heck of a special teams coach but somebody has to take the fall for their pathetic performances. Maybe Crosby's message has gone stale. He's been here FOREVER...

Maybe Crosby's message has gone stale. He's been here FOREVER... Not sure that really matters since special teams is mostly rookies other young players. With the exception of david binn, of course. The problem is that most of the talent on special teams is either starting or on another team and for that the blame goes to AJ Smith. The chargers don't have the depth they once had that allowed them to field decent special teams.

And btw, for those of you who want or hope Cowher will become head coach of the chargers, just know this: won't happen as long as AJ Smith is in charge. Marty was a mentor to Cowher and there is no way he takes the job after the way Marty was fired.

I agree, if Norv was never HC of the Redskins or Raiders the perception of Norv would be different. He has done some good (Rivers, offense, strong finishes, 3 playoff wins) and some bad (slow starts, choke job last year, can be stubborn). I don't think he's ruined the team. The offense and defense are among the best in the league (although we have played weak competition), the STs is killing us right now. Fix the ST's and the fumbles and the team is a lot better. So we'll see if he's able to do it.
