This will set him back but we do have depth. I feel bad for the kid but I hope he makes a full recovery and doesn't rush things.

"When things get tough, you learn a lot about yourself," Cheatham tweeted Wednesday. "Put God first and control what you can control."Haven't met this young man yet...but I love him more with everything I read (this...after all the make-up school crap). Can't wait to join a sold out arena to give him a thunderous ovation the night he makes his debut. Stay strong...and heal quick Z. Mind if I join you in this sentiment?

Season starts in November, so at 3-4 months, he would likely be available by conference play. That being said, it wouldn't shock me if he redshirts this season. It was during the non-conference part of the season that he was going to get the most playing time and maybe work his way to the 8/9 spot in the rotation. I honestly wasn't expecting much of an impact from Z this season due to the depth on this team. As far as him not staying 4 years I'm not sure why not. I don't know that he is/was projected as a legit NBA prospect coming out of high school. He certainly could as many players like Z seem to develop quite well at SDSU. If he is ready for conference play, I want him to play. Let 2018 take care of itself. In 2015-2016, I want an experienced Cheatham. Cheatham would be fighting for the 20 minutes or so that would be available at PF. JJ and Shepard can play there. I suspect JJ will be the man who backs up Chol and plays at PF when Chol plays center for a resting Skylar. 20 minutes or so. If JJ backs up SF too, will be determined by others fighting for those minutes. That includes Pope, and all the guards for a 3 guard lineup. 5: Spencer, Chol 4: Chol, JJ, (Cheatham), Shepard 3: Shepard, JJ, Pope, Allen, Shrigley, Polee, Kell, 2: Polee, Kell, Shrigley, Quinn 1: Zabo, Williams, Kell, Shepard JJ did a great job starting at PF as a sophomore and should do a great job either starting or backing up PF as a senior. If JJ starts at PF, Chol would rotate through C and PF. JJ and Chol could still get 30 minutes each if JJ wins time backing up Shepard at SF. Otherwise there is 80 minutes that Spencer/Chol/JJ divide.

IMO losing Zylan for the crunch time (11/18-12/17) of our OOC hurts a lot . Would guess that is our time to set a good case for seeding in MM . (games during that stretch: Utah, BYU , possibly PITT, Arizona ,then & Washington & Cincy) He was going to be our best reserve at PF, you saw how not having a solid reserve PF last year hurt . So that means JJ starting there or backing up Chol & Spencer - trouble if we play Arizona . We do not have much depth at PF . Pope was suppose to be our true scorer but we do have Polee , JJ , DA even Shepard or Shrigley there . As noted hope he takes time to heel , and comes back when he is totally health. Our end of December games are not very difficult Ball State , Riverside , Christian, Air Force , The MW schedule is not as difficult as the 6 game OOC , but games to look at @ Fresno 1/3, Lobos 1/6 , at Wyoming 1/14 and then REBELS 1/17.

Tough for the kid. He was and is so excited about being an Aztec. Maybe it'll make him hungrier.

For Arizona. 6-9 shooting 2s 7-11 free throws Lead the Aztecs in rebounding No other Aztec was close to having a good game.

Hope he recovers quickly and will be able to hit the court as soon as November. Best wishes to him.

NNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO Perhaps a medical red shirt could make this a bit better. Not possible. And plus, no need. He is a true freshman. His regular redshirt would be used first.

I realize most of you don't follow him on Twitter. But this is one nice young man, really impressed with the things he posts and seems to be about.
He's been tweeting about the injury all summer, going to rehab, working out, etc.
It doesn't seem like this was a surprise to the team at all, they just had to have access to him after 8/20 so he could get treated by SDSU.

Just as long as he does not tell people that he did it jumping off a roof while saving a drowning nephew.

It would be awesome to have him back and ready to go for Maui - He missed the entire summer on campus because of his eligibility.
- He'll now miss all of the official practices before the season starts.
- He's a true freshmen.
- He also just went through the mental fatigue of completing 2 years of high school in a single school year.
Knowing what we know about how Fisher manages his team and that he's already said he wants to be cautious... I fully expect him to red shirt. It's hard to believe he can recover from the injury, learn everything he needs to learn in order to contribute, and also beat out Polee, Shepherd, JJ, and Pope for minutes. Of course, he might be like Jamaal and chose to not red shirt in order to scrounge for a few minutes. But the better thing for us might be for him to get healthy and to dominate the scout team through conference season.

He could take the recovery time to learn as much as he can and the weeks leading up to the Maui tourney getting some minutes and improving, but having said that -- we have a deep bench and something was going to have to give in terms of minutes or a redshirt, just hate to see it work out this particular way.

Tough break after working so hard to become eligible. The kid has DeMar DeRozen skills on tape. Plus big hops!

You can look at his injured paw as an excuse but he played a lot of minutes as a sophomore. He dominated San Marcos and El Cajon Jesus but he hasn't ever done that against division I talent save the Arizona game last year. hopefully a working hand allows him to score at and away for the rim. Hopefully it allows him greater foot speed to defend the wing and better rebounding to contribute at the four. I think that he ate up way too many minutes on this team last year. His first year he played because he had to. Deshawn Stephens was not good and Spencer was raw.

Dakarai Allen may see some more time now, hopefully he can take it easy, find his timing in the offense and stay out of foul trouble on D.

Yes this obviously sucks. But keep in mind, Dakarai was ranked in the same neighborhood as Zylan coming in, and barely saw the court last year. Those who think our season is lost or that this will lose us big games early on have very little faith in our returning players who are really good, and a year older, stronger, BETTER. Speaking of which...it's now Dakarai's time to shine. Maal barely saw the court as a freshman too. He turned out okay. I'm not saying he's going to be MWC POW or anything close, but I think he has the talent to step up and be a solid contributor off the bench this season. With this injury, Dakarai's value and importance to the team...at least from a fan's point of view increased.

Re JJ: The KU fans seemed to be saying "Who was that guy?" after the game. Creighton also saw his value.

Re JJ: The KU fans seemed to be saying "Who was that guy?" after the game. Creighton also saw his value. JJ v Creighton 4-9 FG 7-8 FT 7 Rebounds 3 Assists Steal Block Good game The only other two games before his injury were College of Charleston and UC Riverside. He was 8-10 in those games combined. JJ's major contribution to the KU game was defense. He was the main defender in the doubling scheme of their center. The timing and execution of his doubles were outstanding and the #1 reason we won.
He was a main scorer (and scored efficiently) before his hand injury but his hand wrapped 0-10 versus USD convinced him to take a lesser role. He could be a very pleasant surprise this year.
