Good kid, nice rebounder and shot blocker but will need to develop offensive skills at the D1 level. It looks like Ernest Afalkpui is not coming to San Diego. He was the more superior choice and has had a better summer on the circuit. This kid was a Top 10 rated recruit after his freshman year, who slipped a little and then blew up in the top event of the summer in Vegas. Zona offered him as a freshman for a reason. All the reporting from last week says he was one of the best players there. This is classic SDSU, get on a player before he blows up.And a reason I love the early signing period. Rather than just "committing" and then blowing up further during the season & getting recruited by everyone later (like football), they actually SIGN before they blow up during their senior year!

There are actually several videos available online where you get to see glimpses of Jones' game. The Oracle has not seen enough to make a conclusive opinion. But from what he saw.
Pros: Athletic, long, and fluid. For a big guy, he didn't look awkward out there. His shooting form looks better than Kawhi's shooting form coming out of high school.
Cons: Raw and gets pushed around in the paint. For some reason, the fleeting footage the Oracle saw of Jones did not show he has that killer instinct in the key. Maybe he found that killer instinct during summer play and that's how he redeemed himself in the AAU circuit.
If any of you follow Zylan's twitter account, you might want to ask him (in private) how Jones' game is like. They were teammates but from different classes.

right now recruits can only verbal - a recruit can still change their mind until they sign in November during the early signing week . A guy with a lot of talent when motivated , does need to add some muscle to his frame . It is also hard to judge taller players when they are playing against mostly smaller players in HS .

Yes they can but they sign BEFORE their season starts & they can potentially "blow up", unlike football. Verbals actually mean something in b-ball (or at least more than in football).

He does look like he needs to bulk up but he is likely still growing. He could be a player that really comes into his own his senior year. The thing is we will be deep at his position his freshman year so he can come in and ease into the college game. I didn't see anything on Z's twitter regarding this but one thing I saw on it was that he said something about all his work retaking his junior year classes will make him a better/stronger person. I like that attitude.

Most MBB do not flip and change their commitments, like football players but some - Arizona guard - do "reopen their options " as things happen with the school they originally made verbal with. I would guess B.J . stays with the Aztecs but it can happen . Believe Z Cheatham had to finish up one of his HS classes this summer , could not participate in Summer School practices . Waiting to get cleared for fall practice and heal from his foot injury .

From what I see on Twitter and in the press, Z has great character as a person and competitive drive on and off the court. Can't wait to see him in red & black.

Too bad we don't have a recruiting forum.

There is no mention of Jones' signing on espn.com -- not even a hint. Is SDSU's PR/Sport Information Department on summer vacation? I see that the University of Arizona is on top of it, and it's latest big time recruit was front page news this morning.

I see that the University of Arizona is on top of it, and it's latest big time recruit was front page news this morning. There was a full article in the UT; it's on the AP wire. You can't force feed the story (unless you hire a hacker to intercept their site). It's up to ESPN to decide if they want to print it. They only put 2 recruits on their "On the trail" blog - a top 30 recruit (any top 100's tend to make it) & a kid going to UVa (which may just be proximity to NE issue). It's pretty rare an under the radar recruit gets ESPN coverage - he'll probably show up when they summarize all the weeks signings in a couple days. Like this class thus far - size/athleticism to go with strong combo guard. Great start.

I hope I'm wrong but I see jones as a bench player for his entire tenure at SDSU. He's not physical for his size and settles for the outside shot way too much imo. I would've liked to see him average more blocks and rebounds at the high school level.

would guess he share time with ZC at the 4 and maybe some time at the 5 position next year . While he is learning, key again with most new comers is learning to play D , and fit into the system on offense .

“That’s the only game I’ve been to at Viejas Arena,” Jones said by phone. “That’s all I needed to see.” Fans are important!

I will admit first hand I have not watched any of Jones's games this is from scouting reports and watching a little video, and some experts thoughts on his games.
Jones is a project and that is fine. Not everyone is able to come in and become big contributors as freshman, it would be ideal if Jones was ok as a frosh and got around 300 minutes of experience with I would guess pope and spencer gone after next year. Jones has a solid mid range game and can make FT's, we have missed a big that can make free throw line jumpers for a while to this would be a nice thing to have. The biggest knock against Jones has been his inconsistent energy and his lack of a post game, he does block shots. In a perfect world Jones is ok as a freshman shows flashes and eventually develops into a Malcolm Thomas level career, I think that is a bit optimistic however. I think it is unlikely he starts as a sophomore which means we better get at least 1 of high profile bigs we are looking at. This may seem a bit negative but I do think Jones will be good as a upperclassmen, he just most likely won't be a star and a immediate big contributor.
