Obviously the As are going all in on this season. They need to be able to take down the Detroit Tigers and match them with another front line left handed starter.

Everyone assumes this was a "finally get past Detroit" trade, but IMHO it was more a response to how hot the Angels are. The A's are 0 for forever in elimination games so the last thing they want is to be in the crap-shoot 1-game playoff. Unfortunately, the A's got shutout last night by KC, so that does not bode well for the "they still have enough O without Cespedes" camp. git

As an A's fan my first thought was shock, second was sadness, third was excitement, fourth was oh crap, Detroit got David Price Now that I've had time to let it settle I really think that Beane made the wise choice. Lester is 3-0 in the World Series with a 0.43 ERA. Cespedes is a .350 hitter in post season, but I think with the way this team scores runs this season they will be OK. Cespedes is not a great OF, he makes up for mistakes with his CANON arm. I will certainly miss the highlights, but not miss the bad reads or fumbles in the OF. Plus, next year was going to be Cespedes final year with Oakland, he was going to sign with someone for a gazillion dollars and it wasn't going to be the A's. Lester is a free agent and surely will decline the A's qualifying offer - Beane just guaranteed the A's will be getting someone's 1st round draft choice next year. Here's a good, in-depth analysis. The $ quote: "and a gold-plated protective case for Billy Beane’s giant balls." grantland.com/the-triangle/jon-lester-yoenis-cespedes-red-sox-athletics-blockbuster-mlb-trade-deadline-deal/

There was a lone KC fan talking major $#!+ and was on the verge of catching a good ole fashioned Coliseum beat down. It was priceless...

It's a great move for the sole fact the clause in the contract that mandates Cespedes HAS to be released after next season - Boston cannot even tender a qualifying offer. Oakland had zero intention of signing him past next season due to the dollars, so they got Lester for a player they were going to lose anyway whose numbers were declining.

Well, they just took 5 of 7 from the best team in baseball, so they deserve to talk some $#!+. I would love to see them win the division, would shut up my smack-talking Tiger-fan buddy. Of course knowing the A's luck, they'd end up playing the Tigers anyway as the 1-seed vs. the WC (or worse, Angels win the division and A's have to face Verlander in the 1-game play-in game, UGH).

Dude - Angel fan here. I get why the A's made the move to get Lester.....but why fix what wasn't broken? Angels 10 games up now. I actually feel bad for Oakland. At this rate, the A's might not even get in the playoffs

At this rate, the A's might not even get in the playoffs At this point I don't even WANT them to make the 1-game playoff, most likely would end up facing King Felix or whatever stud DET/KC put up vs. them - and after the last two playoffs we know how that would turn out (i.e. most likely a CG shutout of the A's). I haven't seen this kind of late-season collapse since the 2010 Pads, amazing how many of the teams that I root for are choke artists (I'm also a Sharks fan). But in this instance it goes to show: team-chemistry>Billy/Moneyball/Sabermetrics - and although I appreciate what Beane has accomplished up here in Oakland the past decade, this trade will go down as his worst (by far).

At this rate, the A's might not even get in the playoffs Grats on wrapping up the division, beginning of the season I thought halos were the team to beat and A's 3-peating would be very difficult. Even after A's insanely good first half I thought it would come down to the final A's-Angels series in Oakland. Boy was I wrong, and yet another epic fail by the A's last night against the worst team in baseball [SMH]

I'm guessing you're rooting for KC/would much rather see their pitching than ours.

I was rooting for Oak b/c I live a few doors away from a guy on the team...but otherwise, yes I would much rather face KC. We more or less split the season series withe the A's and went 3-3 with KC. THey way they tore up the bases worries me for sure. THat was a crappy way to lose a game./being an Aztec fan as well, we both know the feeling all to well. It sucks the A's are out honestly b/c your team probably will not look the same next year and the addtiona of Lester was suppoed to get you over the hump.

Once Norris dropped the ball on the pitch-out in the 12th I stopped watching. I've seen enough painful SD sports moments in my lifetime to recognize the warning-signs of the "writing on the wall." Oh well, now I can fully focus on football and wonder how the Aztecs and Chargers will kick me in the groin. Who do you live a few doors from?

Punto - He is a really good guy. At some point I may get the scoop on how everyone felt in the clubhouse but honestly, I really don't talk a lot of ball with him b/c it just seems like everyone probably does and it was a tough loss and a tough way to end the year. Plus, he never asks me what it’s like to be an accountant

Plus, he never asks me what it’s like to be an accountant Yeah, I'd love to hear his thoughts as well. But totally understand you wanting to wait. Interesting piece in the SF Chron today. Beane (and fellow A's fans friends of mine) believe that we wouldn't have even made the playoffs w/o the trade. I still disagree - it was obvious to me that chemistry was never the same after the trade - and it sounds like from the quotes of Reddick and Lowrie that they agree: www.sfgate.com/news/article/A-s-GM-Beane-stands-by-trade-for-Lester-5795508.php
