Skylar Spencer, San Diego State Skylar Spencer, San Diego StateUSA TODAY Sports The defense that made San Diego State a Sweet 16 team last March was built on an extraordinary collection of long, lean speedsters. Most of those stoppers are back for another year, and the best of the bunch is center Skylar Spencer.
Despite his nearly total incompetence as a scorer, Spencer held down a starting job by virtue of his astonishing mobility at 6’10”.
Quickness and leaping ability (both in abundance) accounted for most of his 2.5 blocks per game, but he’s also stronger than his skinny frame makes him

Defense first.
The offense is about to blow up though, as a whole, and I can't wait to be front and center for it.

He's got the footwork to be an absolute stud. He's never been a great rebounder but then he's always had ballhogs like Franklin and Davis grabbing everything.
I want at least averages of 8 PPG 8 RPG and 3 Blocks/Game out of Skylar this year that would be tremendous. He's a defensive player of the year candidate.

Spencer's offense has drastically improved since arriving here. He's taken huge strides and at times has shown he can be an effective scorer in the paint like versus Kansas when he went for 16. If the dude can score 16 versus the future first round picks of KU's front line at their house, he has the ability to be a solid offensive weapon for us. He won't be a primary option, but he's a good garbage scorer and can be a much better one too. He has decent footwork, it's night and day since he arrived. He should be even better on offense this year.

With the right point guard, Spencer would average double digit points at a high efficiency. If Shepard plays SF this year, which I think he will, he will be the next in line to replace Davis, Jamaal, and Kawhi as the double digit rebounder. Spencer needs a player like that to allow him to be blocking shots instead of blocking out.

A key for Spencer's offense is free throw shooting. Once he wants to get to the line, he will feel he can attack the basket instead of trying to get the shot off without getting fouled. Even without that he has a knack of finding a way to score once he gets the ball close to the basket. He is just a tick below 60% from the field in his 2 years - 59.8%.

When the practice facility is completed I think all the players will improve on their FT and FG shooting percentages. Having 24/7 access to hoops will do wonders. When players have to go off campus to work on their game it must be a real pain in the ass for them.

Believe it has been said Aztec offensive scheme will change this year . The PG will not be shooting as much this year . Hopefully there will be more movement with out the ball and passing . Getting more players involved in the offense , especially down low . Would be helpful from the start of practice the guys down low had more plays called for them or just be ready for passes if they moved to get open . If Spencer , Chol , Cheatham , JJ or whomever is playing PF/C know to look for the ball and their offense is needed is important mentally to get them going on offense. Spencer could be a force if he knows the team needs him on both offense and defense . Think it is also important trying to recruit HS bigs in the future that we show we can develop them . Hope Davis can make a contribution as well as M. Thomas . Aztecs could use some offense from Spencer , Chol , and Cheatham down low .

Sometimes BLOBs and SLOBs have set plays but not often.
