More questions but no answers, except; Scary. Leaks coming from the Russians indicate a bold future Putin agenda that puts in jeopardy many of the treaties the eastern European countries like Ukraine signed with the West and Russia. I don't fear for Finland as some have proffered but countries like Estonia should be worried. Sad situation. Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

The treaty of 1994, in which Ukraine gave up its nukes in return for a guarantee that its territory would not be violated. That included the Crimean Peninsula. By the way, Russia signed that treaty. As far the Baltic states are concerned, Russian encroachment would call for NATO military response. If NATO were to say, "What do we care about far off Estonia?" (Which, if you put in the word Danzig instead of Estonia, you would have the thoughts of many Europeans in mid 1939), that organization would be finished. Maybe that's just what Putin has in mind. AzWm Technically, it was not a treaty. That is why we don't have troops on the ground in Ukraine right now. I think that what I made reference to were the Vienna Accords, which I believe qualifies as a treaty. There was never any question of NATO troops being stationed in Ukraine. In fact, Ukraine did not ask for NATO membership. Furthermore, they did not even apply for membership in the European Union. They did want associate membership in the latter because that would have been of benefit to Ukrainian businesses. In any event, it's pretty clear that Vladimir Putin wants to increase Russia's political power. Improving the standard of living for the average Russian doesn't mean a whole lot to him. Especially when it entails closer ties to the West. AzWm

William. I am referring to this memorandum. Which is what I believe you are also referring to. It is not a formal Treaty but more of an 'understanding'. In hindsight, Ukraine should have insisted on a binding treaty to protect itself. >> Link <<

The only thing Putin needs to do, is to marry a Romanov descendant i front of patriarch Kirill in Moscow's cathedral. But i don't think he is that smart ?

We are war wary and spread much to thin to once again get into a major campaign. We have a ditherer-in-chief rather than a decisive leader so our foreign policy is a mess. No country anywhere respects us as they once did. Europe is at risk. Those Baltic States should worry.

The canonization of Putin by the right has turned out to be a major egg on the face moment for anyone really paying attention.

So, ISIS conquests in Iraq did NOT take Obama by surprise. Once again, he lied.

I believe that the Ukrainians asked us to supply them with electronic jamming equipment which might have spared a lot of people the horrific fate of being blown out of the sky over eastern Ukraine. However, our doughty President did help the Ukrainians; he sent them military style TV dinners called MREs. Now, with that kind of support, there should be no problem.
Honestly, Obama is making Chamberlain look not quite so ineffectual.

So, ISIS conquests in Iraq did NOT take Obama by surprise. Once again, he lied. Drones would have been really helpful if available when ISIS was still in staging areas. It is a little late now that ISIS is in cities surrounded by civilians. There is hardly a decision that the Obama Administration makes that is helpful on any front.

Putin is smart, cunning and ruthless. He's a leader, although a bad one. All we have is a lawyer who thinks he only has to negotiate. A bonafide *****.
