Europe has counted on the protection of the U.S. military for a long, long time. Now the E.U. has barely a token force. Consider the German army. In 1991, the Deutsches Heer had 360,000 men. As of one year ago, it had a strength of a bit over 62,000. That's a reduction of 5/6ths in slightly more than two decades. Who could take a force of just 62,000 men seriously? Basically, no one.

AzWm I have since read that the German army is now down to 51,000 men. The army of the UK is a bit better at 81,000. But it's not really the number of troops that matters. What matters is that, for various reasons, Europe is a reactive force, and not a very formidable one, at that. AzWm

Armies are expensive and the socialist Europeans are running low on ca$h. Why have a large army when they can rely on the United States for protection?
Seriously, this is not a good sign. Every country in Western Europe has been overrun by displaced immigrants from Islamic countries. Something will happen and there will eventually be a serious conflict with the natives.

And, of course, the U.S. is an increasingly questionable defensive shield for a couple of reasons. First, we have and continue to cut the size of our military. The other is that many Americans, and that includes me, feel that it's time for Europe to take more responsibility for their own defense. AzWm
