Spain is collapsing. Europe is vexed at stupidity. It is all going DOWN! The Unions do not understand that the money simply is not there. Spanish workers disrupted transport and broadcasts in the first general strike in eight years as demonstrators also marched through Brussels for a day of protest against spending cuts by European governments. Labor unions are fighting austerity measures aimed at taming budget deficits across Europe and protests are planned in 12 countries including Ireland, Italy and Portugal, the European Trade Union Confederation said. Protesters marched in Brussels ahead of a meeting between union members and European Commission President Jose Barroso. In Athens, rail, telecommunication and port workers staged strikes. www.bloomberg.com/news/2010-09-28/spain-girds-for-first-general-strike-in-8-years-to-protest-zapatero-cuts.html

mixed economies do not work WELL, IT IS OBVIOUS THAT OUR ECONOMY IS NOT WORKING! Neither party wants to put people back to work. We need a new party, one that puts America First in priorities. THEREFORE, I propose that we create that party and call it AMERICA FIRST.We can run as write in candidates in our congressional districts.

It's socialism which doesn't work. It never has, anywhere. Every nation that has tried it has gone bankrupt within a few decades.

Socialism has served Germany and the Scandinavian countries very well for the past half century. Wonderful system. It is not horribly morally corrupt like our satanic system of government.

Europe has been going down this path to disaster for years. Hope we catch on and get controll of things to the point we can reverse what has been happening here for a long time as well.

Yewbetcha! chicagoboyz.net/archives/16177.htmlRemember, Socialism is different things to different people. Sweden is socialist. The system works. Whether they swing this way or that way for this season or that season matters not. They are still socialist, and the system works. Other countries have overdone it, and a state with a "Total Give To The Poor" mentality will soon find that it does not have enough money to finance the grandiose schemes. Too much of a good thing can leave you with a belly ache. Communism was Socialism to the extreme. It has always failed, and always will. Socialism still holds on to a reward system for achievement whereas Communism according to its initial leader was run with the concept of "From each according to his ability, to each according to his need." It sounds great, but allows for too much freeloading. I favor Socialism with sterilization of those who are least prone to contribute to society. Say we cut the nuts off of every male who has an IQ below 120. That way, far fewer freeloaders would be born and would not tax the system.

Let me suggest a point on which your position needs a bit of fine tuning. If one wishes to speak of classical socialism, one refers to a nation in which the principal means of production and distribution are owned and controlled by the government.
The Scandinavian countries have social democratic systems in which industry is pretty much private. The government, however, largely controls the economy through regulation. It has worked somewhat well over the years, partly because the European nations have had to spend very little on defense. That's because we Americans have spent trillions on defense to protect our allies.
Now, however, European governments have realized that they have promised too much to too many of their citizens. The bills are coming due and the ultimate fate of economies that are ruled by politics instead of sound business considerations is evident.
There ain't no such thing as a free lunch.

AzWm Though I can not disagree with your definition (I hate getting in semantics arguments as they accomplish nothing.) I have to say this: The reality of western politics is such that Communist refers to a nation in which the principal means of production and distribution are owned and controlled by the government. Socialism has evolved into cooperation between Government and Industry, with government providing health and retirement benefits and liberal access to college studies for the betterment of those with capable minds. The modern Socialist system was realized in Nazi Germany before they became a War Economy and everything went to hell. The efficiency that was realized has now been copied by a large number of western democracies. It works. It works well. It is to the benefit of the country and the people that government ensures the availability of services that they do. The United States is one of the few countries that has been cheating the poor of the population by not providing services for their needs.
