Very good signing for our Padres. He also can be the closer if something happens to Street or if Street struggles. I think Benoit had 24 saves last season. Good exchange for losing Gregerson.

Good exchange for losing Gregerson. 24 saves and 9 holds with only 2 blown saves. You get a blown save if you give up the lead in a hold situation. So looking at Saves+Holds versus Blown Saves is a good way to look at it. 33 and 2 is very good. Big upgrade over Gregerson.

I like the signing, he's a quality reliever.
To call him a "big" upgrade over Gregerson is honestly, ridiculous. Certainly, Benoit only had 2 blown saves to Gregersons 5 but the year before Benoit himself had 5.
Luke Gregerson:
29 years old 2.88 ERA (career) 1.09 WHIP (career) .213 BAA Last 5 years: 132 holds, 24 blown saves.
Joaquin Benoit:
36 years old 4.11 ERA (career) 1.28 WHIP (career) .232 BAA
Last 5 years: 106 holds, 17 blown saves.
To be fair, Benoit has pitched better the last 5 seasons because he has been a Tiger pitching half the time in Comerica Park. We all know Texas is hitter friendly, and his career stats reflect that. And of course, Gregerson has been helped by Petco. Since joining Detroit, Benoit has been very good.
Though, Gregerson has been excellent on the road with a slightly lower ERA away from Petco.
My only point is, to say this guy is a major upgrade over one of the better middle relievers of the last 5 years is not factually correct.
