Not a big deal, but Padres clearing a spot on the 40-man in time for the Rule-5 Draft tomorrow.
My guess is the Padres have eyes for a Rule-5 player and Bass is a low-upside, but useful, piece for the Astros who had 37 guys on their 40-man.

Are they clearing a spot or chopping off excess to not expose anyone?

They traded Bass in exchange for the Astros to use their first overall pick in the Rule 5 draft and then trading that player to the Padres. So we traded Bass for the first pick in the Rule 5 draft, a player that Byrnes has previously said he had his eye on. I like it.

He has a low angle delivery that is especially effective versus lefties.
v LHB 2013 .198 BAA, 5 Walks, 25 Ks (in 21.2 equiv innings), 3.44 GO/AO, 0.98 WHIP.
Ground ball/strike out pitcher against lefties.
Since he was from Arizona, our front office knows him. He was a starter, then moved to the bullpen in 2012, than mostly used as a lefty specialist for the first time last year.

A quality pickup. This guy threw 4 consecutive no hitters in high school.

Can he go right from low-A to the Bigs though?

Can he go right from low-A to the Bigs though? Lefty specialists have the best chance of making that jump. I guess the Padres feel he can.

I'm curious...if the Padres do pursue Benoit at $7M a year, is that to close? It seems odd the Padres would be looking at him to be an 8th inning guy at that price, and considering this front office history. So, if this deal goes down does that mean the Padres would be looking to shop Huston Street? $7M certainly is not unheard of for a setup man, I guess I just didn't expect SD to go that route. Teams are spending this off season a bit more, with the new national TV contract money and it would be great if the Padres added an impact bat.

Most would rather close but most would rather play in San Diego.

Most would rather close but most would rather play in San Diego. Yes, that is for sure.....the appeal of living in San Diego is for sure a draw. And it looks like the money may be the same, though MLBTR reports the Padres have maybe offered an option 3rd year. If he goes Cleveland, he joins a team coming off 92 wins and a postseason berth versus a franchise that won 76 games. And, the likelihood of being the closer in CLE since they let Chris Perez go.

Indians agreed to terms today with John Axford to be their closer, I expect they're likely out on Benoit.

DECEMBER HOT STOVE CONTINUES: Padres Sign Alberto Gonzalez By Steve Adams [December 17 at 4:51pm CST] The Padres have signed infielder Alberto Gonzalez to a minor league contract with an invitation to Spring Training, per the team's Transactions page. The deal was first reported a week ago by Hely D. Rodriguez of the Venezuelan newspaper El Siglo (Twitter link). The 30-year-old batted a combined .193/.217/.281 in 60 plate appearances between the Cubs and Yankees in 2013. In parts of seven Major League seasons, the Venezuela native has a .239/275/.315 batting line with four homers. He has more than 400 innings of experience at shortstop, second base and third base, and he's also made brief appearances at first base and each of the outfield corners. www.mlbtr.com
