I find recruiting 12 -13 year olds (or even younger) disturbing The whole thing is just naughty - websites charging money for interviews with minors, kids spending more time playing one sport and traveling around than anything else in their life, ugh. It's the market economy answer to soviet academies.

Sports is big business in many different senses. Many will remember how the East Block counties would virtually kidnap promising young athletes to be trained in special schools. In the US there is no government pseudo-kidnapping, but instead of that we have over-eager parents who do much the same thing. I am thinking especially of kids who are sent off to tennis schools in (I think) Florida.
And there have always been stage-mothers who paraded their adorable tots before the casting directors in Hollywood. (Mrs. AztecWilliam, who is the best looking great-grandmother in America, should have had one back about 65 years ago! ! ! )
