Despite my protestations about not "talking" to you on here, the last 3 weeks have been difficult for personal reasons that I won't go into and I have been MIA for those reasons much more than because I've been pissed off at you - it's either a strength or a failing that I cannot stay pissed off at anyone for very long.
What I'm wondering is the reaction in your community, if there is one yet, to the County Planning Commission recommendation yesterday that the Merriam Mountains project be approved. I'm still in touch with a lot of friends at County Planning, but I have little contact with people who live in your area so I'm just wondering what the thinking up there happens to be.

There is not all that much comment about the project since it is across the road (I 15) and an exit further south. Most who do comment are ambivalent. I am for the project, but wish that some things would get ironed out and cleared up. 1. The road improvement appears to go only as far down as to where Deer Springs Road turns into Twin Oaks Road. It should be improved all the way to 78. 2. Where is the water coming from and how is the Wild Fire issue being dealt with? 3. How about access to Gopher Cannon for safety reasons alone? I like the idea of the shopping that will be included. It would cut my distance to a super market down by several miles. I also object to the people who think that their home is the last one that should be built. The seven grand a week Golden Door Spa on the south side of Deer Springs has voiced objections but only for the noise aspect during construction. I will urge my Supervisor to vote for the program and that he have them answer my questions.

Surprised Welk Village didn't fight it harder... they beat the rock quarry in the same location. Must not have affected their viewshed.

There was a pretty well organized bunch who sent out a lot of inflamatory mailings that might have said they would provide a box lunch to anyone willing to go.

There was a pretty well organized bunch who sent out a lot of inflamatory mailings that might have said they would provide a box lunch to anyone willing to go. Yes, I did mean Welk and it's interesting that they offered lunch to everyone who showed up. I'm not sure who else up there would be as organized, unless it was the Golden Door, which it might have been. I know that area quite well and I can't think of any other organization who would be able to put something like that together. As a sort of interesting side note, when I worked for County Solid Waste, Merriam Mountain was considered the best location for a new North County Landfill. The Welk people hated the notion, but look what they've received in return. And now Rancho Guejito is heating up again. A seriously amazing place. I got to see a fair amount of it back around '91 when I was processing the vacation of Rancho Guejito Road on their property. Probably the most amazing piece of land not in a park in California and the last intact Spanish land grant in the state. Just mention the name and the enviros drool like Pavlovian dogs. Doesn't matter to you since it's on the other side of VC and most likely we'll both be dead before any development takes place, but man, I'm hoping if they actually apply for development, I'm still alive to watch the circus. =Bob

I suspect that most Welk residents see this as a positive move. Just having to drive accross the street to go to the market should be a reason enough to be for it. I am more concerned about the water issue and the fire safety for that proposed development than any other consideration. If the Board of Supervisors are OK with it, it should be a big plus for those of us who live in the area.

If the Board of Supervisors are OK with it, it should be a big plus for those of us who live in the area. Take my word for it; because of the years I spent at DPLU, I understand your desire to have local services and agree that there should be more of them where you live. Too damn many "bedroom communities" without the proper commercial uses to go with them. The question I would have is whether or not those currently living at Welk or Castle Creek will see it happen because this is going to be a long term project; upwards of 15 years. And don't get me wrong on this. I find your opinion valuable because it expresses what you generation needs and planners should always consider that (and far too often do not). =Bob
