I feel bad for San Jose state because they are soon to be Northridge, Long Beach, et al and won't even be a top tier team in bball in the big west. It's one thing for football to fail at CSUN. The school didn't even open until 1959 and their "stadium" was a converted quarter horse track with horrendous wooden benches on one side and no stands whatsoever on the other. However, SJSU is the oldest of the 23 CSU campuses and although their stadium is old, it's at least a legit DIA venue. Terrible mismanagement and lack of alumni support over the last 20 years are the only explanations.

It's over for san jose state - Hot Karl just said that the remaining wac football teams will be unclassified and so will neither be 1a or 1aa as a conference. Will they choose to survive a few more years by being the Generals and just go around taking body bag games before they close shop, or will they just pack it up.

It would, however, lose its classification as a Football Bowl Subdivision conference.
At the same time, it wouldn’t be FCS, either – it would be “unclassified” according to Benson.
But … and here’s where it gets confusing … while the WAC itself wouldn’t be FBS, the schools in the WAC would be — meaning they would count as FBS opponents for scheduling purposes. So, they basically won't have bowl games, the bcs stuff is actually nebulous, won't have a tv contract. They will have to be the San Jose generals and play 4-7 body bag games just to break even which will just further erode any interest. Will have to hope they get things pushed forward to have any auto bids in the other sports It's over johnny

When I was a youngster half a century ago, there were a lot of California State Schools that played football. Sadly we are down to San Diego State, Fresno State, San Jose State, Sacramento State and Cal Poly. If San Jose State goes the way of Long Beach State, Fullerton State, Los Angeles State and all of the rest, it will sure be a sad thing to see. You forgot Humboldt State. They are Div II. But otherwise your post is quite correct. And it's not just the state schools that have dropped football. Think about Pacific, U.of San Fransisco, Santa Clara, and Saint Mary's. Those last two used to play first class opponents and occasionally made it to bowl games. And then there is Loyola, Pepperdine, Santa Barbara, and on and on. California. . . the graveyard of college football programs!AzWm

William, Humboldt, CSUN, Cal St. Fullerton, Sonoma St., et al are apples and oranges vis-a-vis SJSU.
SJSU was once a very good and pretty high visibility college football program. None of the above ever were.
But consider this. In 2012, SJSU will be the only one of the 16 members of the 1998 WAC still stuck in that POS conference. Shame on them.

William, Humboldt, CSUN, Cal St. Fullerton, Sonoma St., et al are apples and oranges vis-a-vis SJSU. To a degree, yes, but the same pressures that killed FB at nearly 20 Calif. colleges and universities impact all schools regardless of a school's NCAA status. Title IX, is one such pressure. The Cal-NOW deal is another. And, perhaps most of all, the fact that the cost of supporting intercollegiate sports in general and FB in particular has risen rick a rocket in recent decades. SJSU was once a very good and pretty high visibility college football program. None of the above ever were. How about San Francisco State, a school whose FB program was about equal to ours before St. Don landed? And St. Mary's and Santa Clara were University Division (today's FBS) members when we were playing Redlands, Pepperdine, etc. I don't think I quite understand your point. Whether a school was Div I (e.g. Long Beach) or Div II (Cal Poly Pomona) is not the point. The point is that California, for a number of reasons, is and has been for some time very hostile to intercollegiate football. Florida Atlantic and Florida International are not setting the football world on fire, but they did manage to start FB programs within the last few years and are now at the FBS level. They were able to do that because Florida is much more hospitable to college FB. If those schools were called Calif. Pacific and Pacific International, they would now be cheering on their womens badminton team. They were able to start up FB from scratch largely, perhaps mainly, because they are in a good state for college FB (FLA) rather than the worst one (CA). But consider this. In 2012, SJSU will be the only one of the 16 members of the 1998 WAC still stuck in that POS conference. Shame on them. The fish rots from the head. I.e., San Jose State, apparently, has not had a President who declared that a strong football program would be of benefit to the school as a whole. AzWm

I notice that we have the Spartans on our schedule for 2012 and 2013. If we have an open date for 2011, it may behoove of us to add them to next years schedule, too.
I hope San Jose State can survive, but after the demise of the WAC, and I know this will be hard for San Jose State fans to accept, I hope they will entertain the idea of moving to the FCS with either the Big Sky or Great West.
