Padres Focused On Trading Relievers By Tim Dierkes [July 29 at 9:49am CST] The Padres have about a 25 percent chance of making a significant trade deadline deal, a person familiar with their talks tells ESPN's Jerry Crasnick. Crasnick says the Padres' big-picture ideas haven't materialized, so they're focused on moving bullpen pieces such as Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher. I imagine Gregerson, who has drawn significant trade interest, is likely off the Tigers' radar in the wake of their Jose Veras acquisition today. The Padres aren't likely to move third baseman Chase Headley, left fielder Carlos Quentin, or closer Huston Street, reports MLB.com's Corey Brock. If they do make a trade, it appears the focus will be on acquiring starting pitching. www.mlbtraderumors.com/

Another year out of the playoff hunt at the trade deadline. That makes 3 in a row and 5 out of our last 6 seasons.

Another year out of the playoff hunt at the trade deadline. That makes 3 in a row and 5 out of our last 6 seasons. The NL West is the most unstable division. Even with the freakish amount of wins the Dodgers have had this last month, I would not be surprised to see the Padres and the Dddgers gpoing neck and neck for first place by season's end.

28-year-old Diamondbacks righty Ian Kennedy is having an off year, but could be a popular trade target since he's under team control through 2015 as an arbitration eligible player. The latest:
The Padres are getting closer to a deal for Kennedy, tweets Jon Heyman of CBS Sports. There are legs to the Kennedy to San Diego rumors, tweets Yahoo's Jeff Passan, who says Thatcher would be one of the players going to Arizona. The Padres are in active discussions to acquire Kennedy, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports. Speaking on 620 KTAR today, D'Backs GM Kevin Towers said, "I'm fairly confident that there will be some trade news involving the Diamondbacks probably by the end of the day." Kennedy to the Padres "could happen," hears Danny Knobler of CBS Sports. The D'Backs could move Kennedy as a way to improve the back end of their bullpen, writes Scott Miller of CBS Sports. They've inquired with the Padres on Luke Gregerson and Joe Thatcher.

Kennedy to the Padres is a done deal. Thatcher, Matt Stites and a compensation round B pick.

The Padres have bolstered their rotation for the present and future, acquiring righty Ian Kennedy from the division rival Diamondbacks for lefty reliever Joe Thatcher, Double-A reliever Matt Stites, and a compensation round B draft pick, according to a tweet from MLB.com's Corey Brock. It's a surprisingly light haul for Kennedy, a 28-year-old who is under team control through 2015 as an arbitration eligible player

I love the Kennedy pickup! He's scuffled a bit this year, but has always been a quality starter, and only 2 years ago ranked as one of the best in the league. Moving to a pitcher-friendly environment from the Zonie launching pad (the 2nd highest altitude ballpark only to Planet Coors) should help bring him back to his norms. He's got the skillset to immediately become the staff ace... legit #1 starter talent.

If Ian Kennedy and Cory Luebke come back to their pre 2013 value, we could have a good 1/2 punch.
Career Numbers prior to this year Luebke 188 innings 3.21 ERA I.Kenn 684 innings 3.76 ERA (in Arizona)
They are both 28 years old.
It then becomes filling 3 spots with veterans Stults, Volquez, and Richard; Young pitchers Ross and Cashner; and rookies Wieland, Erlin, O'Sullivan, Sampson, and Kelly.

Volquez will be non-tendered. Not sure Richard is part of the 2014 plans, either. But he's well liked by the club. Casey Kelly will not be ready to pitch until probably June or July, assuming his rehab isn't filled with setbacks. I think it's Kennedy/Cashner/Stults/Ross and a mystery candidate.

That seems like a likely outcome.

That looks very plausible... Hopefully, Leubke will be fully recovered from his Tommy John surgery and be able to work his way back into the 2014 rotation. If he's anywhere close to what we've seen of him, that wouldn't be a bad starting five.

Only question would be Cashner's durability and presumed increased workload...still think he's better off a closer-type, but the club obviously feels otherwise. Luebke should be ready by the start of 2014, and if he can regain/add some velocity, he's a darn good one.
