Yeah, for whatever reason, he just doesn't seem to have the control we've come to expect from him, and he doesn't have good enough "stuff" to be able to make mistakes to good hitters. I would have been much more comfortable today if they had brought in Gregorson in the 9th instead of Street... He's got a better slider (and one thing the Padres have shown this week is that Puig can't hit a good slider yet), is better against LH batters (Gonzalez, Ethier coming up #2 and #4 in the inning), and keeps the ball down better (fewer HR's). Given the hitters coming up in the inning, Gregorson would have been a better fit.

Not a closer anymore. He has to be pinpoint perfect, or he's in trouble.

Street is sucking but what happened to the offense the last two games. No runs against Capuano who was going on 3 days rest is pretty awful. Headley is lost right now.

He's always been a junkballer. He needs to throw better junk. Looked like he was about to cry yesterday. I don't know that I'd qualify him as a "junkballer"... He's always been a strikeout pitcher, right around 1 K per inning, and better than that for three of his 9 seasons (including with us last year when he recorded 47 K's in only 39 innings). This season, his strikeouts are way down (only 15 in 26.1 innings). Not sure how much of that is related to his recent DL issues (probably a lot), but he's way off his game this year.

He is clearly not an elite closer. If the Pads have any playoff aspirations they can't be blowing too many 9th inning leads, especially since this team is built around defense and a pitching.

Street circa 2012 would be fine. Street circa 2013, not so much.

Since the first post in this thread: 12.1 innings 0 ER 5 hits 2 walks 14 Ks I guess all he needed was the extra motivation of trash talk in this thread Jason Grilli (PIT) and Grant Balfour (Oak) both have 30 saves and 1 blown save. Street has 23 saves and 1 blown save. Every other closer in MLB with more than 15 saves has at least 2 Blown Saves.

Which, is actually pretty respectable. 74% save percentage. espn.go.com/mlb/stats/team/_/stat/pitching/league/nl/sort/savePct/type/expanded/order/trueStreet himself is only credited with 1 BLSV, and has had a pretty decent season overall.

If a relief pitcher gives up a lead (< 3 run) in any inning, that is a blown save. That is why James Russell of the Cubs leads the NL in blown saves (7) but has no saves. Team blown saves by save percentagePadres are tied for the fewest blown saves in the NL with 10 but are 4th in save percentage because of fewer opportunities. Look at the DBacks with 23 blown saves (2nd worst S%). Towers was always good at creating bullpens with the Padres. No wonder he wanted Thatcher so badly.

Huston Street's stats since this thread started are amazing.
26.1 Innings 24 Ks 1 Run 0.34 ERA 11 Hits 4 BB 0.57 WHIP 16 Saves 0 Blown Saves 2-0 Record
Since the first post in this thread he has been the best relief pitcher in baseball.

Injury/not sound earlier in the season? He has been pretty damn impressive the last half of the season. He will never overpower anyone, but he made Puig look sick last night.
