Hard to explain why he's successful. He basically only throws a fastball. Jason Cole (from Baseball Prospectus) said a Texas League hitter told him you "basically have to treat his fastball like it's in the high 90s." He throws like 90% fastballs and doesn't really have another pitch. He mixes in a breaking pitch that, from what I've seen, is mostly a get-me-over pitch to change looks.

Don't think he's a closer in the majors. As mentioned, he's pretty much a one-pitch guy. I think Stites has future closer written all over him though, if he continues to develop.

Are you surpirsed that he went 29 innings giving up 1 run this year in "AA"? I bet some Scouts are. He has one pitch but what a pitch. Hitters can't see it. Very deceptive. As the numbers show they can't hit it. He is not a scouts player but he has been extremely successful at every level. This is a classic money ball situation. Moneyball credits success over scouting reports. The only way to see how it burns is to put it in the fire.

No, I'm not surprised, Bill. He's dominated at every level he's been at. Big jump from the Texas League to the majors though, obviously. I think Stites will surprise some people though. Neither is on the 40 man yet...Definitely will have some decisions to make in the not so distant future.

40 man roster problems abound. Padres exposed very well liked Darnell

Have Hoffy work with him on learning a changeup to go with that canned heat and he could be a superstar.

He's officially called up now. It's been "happening" for the last week or so.

Is Bill talking to himself at the end of this thread here?

Quackenbush finally got into a "AAA" game. He pitched 2 scoreless innings to get a win. He was brought in a 2-2 game in the 7th inning. I guess he will not be the closer in Tucson. Miles Mikolas has been the closer there.

Miles Mikolas has been the closer there. "Closers" and "Setup guys" tend to be pretty interchangable as far skillsets go, so I wouldn't downgrade his prospects based on whether he's used in the 7th, 8th, or 9th inning in the minors. The thing to look at is effectiveness in late inning pressure situations.

Quackenbush is now the closer since Mikolas was promoted. He got his first save in "AAA" last night. The couple of outings before that he gave up some runs.

Quackenbush was beat up for the first time in his minor league career after his call-up to "AAA". But he has recovered and is pitching quite well lately.
Last few weeks 13 games 16.2 innings 11 scoreless games 3 ER 1.62 ERA
PCL is a tough place to pitch. Quackenbush seems to be doing well now.
He allowed 8 ER in his first 11 PCL innings.
