The lower end of the lineup, Hundley and Kotsay, come through. The bullpen chokes it up. Where is Street when you need him?
I guess the upside of this is that we get a higher draft pick next year. With Puig hitting the ball right and left we will finish last in the division. Since the Owners are counting pennies we won't sign any free agents so we will have to wait for the minors to produce some arms that can help out here. So how many of this year's picks will we sign and will contribute? To me it looks like the minor's stats are ok but nothing to write home to Mom about. Aztecs might get to a BCS bowl before the Pads get to the playoffs.

Actually, I am seeing signs of hope with this bunch. Cabrera and Blanks are showing some promise and the Gyrko is living up to expectations. This team is starting to hit.

The worst player on the team over the last month and a half has been Chase Headley.

Main issue with the team is starting pitching which Byrnes failed to address in the offseason and the team continues not to address it in-season. If they are serious about making a run this year they need to make a move now.

Main issue with the team is starting pitching which Byrnes failed to address in the offseason and the team continues not to address it in-season. If they are serious about making a run this year they need to make a move now. Agree. But: The Padres did sign Jason Marquis who has done much better than pitchers they would have signed if they tried to get someone really good - like Loshe, Milwakee or Joe Blanton, Angels. Richard and Volquez are both having problems this season. If they both were at last year's levels, the Padres would be near the top of the division. Having an Ace is most important in the post-season. The Padres have Stauffer and Ross in the bullpen and Bass in the minors. one or two of those may be starting before the season gets out of hand. Giving Richard some time to recapture his previous level is probably a good idea although as a fan it is frustrating. When the Padres get Alonzo back and Headley (and hopefully Grandel) starts hitting, they could be a good offensive team. I am still generally up-beat about this season. We are not in as bad a position as most think.

Leubke will make an impact down the stretch.

And now no Maybin again. Somehow I just don't feel all excited seeing Kotsay play center. Sigh.

And now no Maybin again. Somehow I just don't feel all excited seeing Kotsay play center. Sigh. It sucks. Maybin is by far the best defensive CF we have. No one on the Padres can make up the difference with a bat that exists with the glove. You will never see Kotsay in center field again. Those days are long gone. I suspect they will bring up a 1st baseman to allow Blanks more time in the outfield. I hope they don't play Amarista in CF anymore. Forsythe can play the outfield but with Gyorko out, he is planted at 2B. We really need Grandal and Headley at the levels they showed last year.

Leubke will make an impact down the stretch. Hopefully. He is our best starter.

Outfielder Jaff Decker has been recalled from "AAA". Once he was one of our top minor league prospects but his star has fallen far with sub-par year after sub-par year. He is very good at drawing walks. His body is a lot like former Padre outfielder who made a name for himself in Philly.

Padres were a Huston Street away from sweeping the Rockies 4 games and now swept the Braves 3 games. Even though Alonzo, Gyorko, Maybin, and Street are out they have won 6 of 8 games to move only 2 games below .500.
When they make their run, many will be shocked.

Since April 23 the Padres have the 5th best record in Baseball and the best in the NL West. If all NL west teams continue play like the last 45 games, the Padres would finish 1.5 games out of first and 15 games above .500. Who was the guy that the Pads called up today? Some guy on the mound only allowed 1 run and had 9 ko's over 7 innings. He was wearing Edinson's jersey since it said Volquez on the back but obviously wasn't him. Anyone have an idea?

He was wearing Edinson's jersey since it said Volquez on the back but obviously wasn't him. Anyone have an idea? Edison started the year very badly. Bud Black said it was missing all of spring training. Edison gave up 5 runs in back to back games in mid-May. Bud Black said he was having blister problems on the fingers of his pitching hand. Edison had a terrible game at Coors Field. That happens sometimes. I say curve ball pitchers in perticular have trouble in Colorado. Edison throws a curve ball at a higher percentage than all but 4 other pitchers in baseball. The Rockies shy away from aquiring those type of pitchers. Without those 6 games Edison has a 2.76 ERA this season. Are those excuses legit reasons that won't recur? Or will we find others. Remember, Edison did have a 4.14 ERA last year while starting 32 games for the Padres.

Wow! Above 500 without 4 starters. I don't think Kyle Blanks will be going back to Tucson anytime soon.

It's been a long time since this team could have middle of the lineup player losses and still score runs. Headley (the Padres best hitter)starts the season a month late and still hasn't started hitting. Grandal misses the 1st 50 games. Alonso, the teams leader in RBIs lost for a month. Quentin not able to play more than 2 games in a row. Maybin out for most of the year.
There have only been a couple times in Padres history that they could withstand these kinds of losses and been competitive.

Going to the game tonight, first game since last game of the season in 2010 when I almost took on 4 drunken Giant fans (my wife stepped in and put the kibosh on that). Will post pics if I can figure it out...

Gyorko lost Forsythe replaces. Alonzo lost Blanks replaces. In years past the Padres went to the trade market to replace injured players. Unless it is a major trade that results in below average play at the position filled.

Boy did I choose a good game as my first since 2010 last night. I had awesome seats, first row RF and had a perfect profile view of the Venable catch. Without a doubt the best catch I have ever seen live, even more sweet it being a Padre, in hostile territory and game-saving - for those that haven't seen it: www.sportsgrid.com/mlb/the-daily-yam-will-venable-game-saver/
