Before the Season I saw SS as an everyday position that the Padres could easily improve. Not any more.
Cabrera both offensively and defensively is playing at a high level.
Defensively he is making plays he didn't make last year and is not committing errors at near the rate. Last year he committed an error every 6 games, this year his rate is an error every 14 games. You don't even need range factor (up 0.5) to realize that he is making plays he didn't last year. Last night he went both deep behind 2B (with a 270 degree spin) and well into the 4.5 hole to get assists.
Offensively his walk rate is up. Cabrera is the last guy any pitcher wants to walk. Yet he has 5 more walks than any other Padre player. He did this while raising his BA from .247 to 270. Those two increased his OBP (most important stat for Cabrera) from .323 to .350. He continues to steal bases at a nice clip.
I think we found our improvement at Short Stop...it is the same guy but version 2.0.

There's something up with this guy. He hasn't hit a ton of homers, but he's shown quite a bit more punch. A guy (INCLUDING CHASE HEADLEY OR BRADY ANDERSON) doesn't just become a power hitter (even by this guy's standards) overnight. I still don't think he's a long-term answer. This fool's been here a long time. He's an infield version of Will Venable. 4A"Been here a long time" isn't very clear. He is 26. Last year he was 25. Players improving from age 25 to age 26 is not a surprise. Will Venable is 30. In baseball that is a huge difference.

Might be a little premature to call him the next will venable. He's logged all of 3 years in the majors. Dude is playing shortstop and playing damn well. He LEAD the league in steals last year and is doing the same this year. He's not really hitting for power, he's fouling off pitches and going the other way. Right now he's doing everything right. His defense is really where he's improved. Not saying he's our savior at SS but he's the best we've had in a long time. Let's hope it continues and he doesn't pull a Khalil Greene. Hmmmm, I have this guy on my fantasy team and he is a point scoring machine, which kind of makes sense now that he is mentioned in the latest PED accusations.

The single most important offensive stat for Cabrera is On Base Percentage. It is currently .374. For a good fielding SS that steals a ton of bases, a .374 OBP is outstanding.
