The Padres 4 man rotation didn't last too long. Burch Smith is being called up from "AA" San Antonio to be the 5th starter.
He was the Padres 14th round selection of the 2011 draft out of Oklahoma.
He is a very hard throwing stud who has hit 100 MPH. I saw him pitch in Lake Elsinore last year and was very impressed with his speed on command. Power with control.
Turned 23 years old on April 12.
In "AA" this year.
6 Starts 1.15 ERA 31.1 Innings 37 Strikeouts (6 BB) .155 Batting Average Against 0.73 WHIP

I've seen every start Burch has made at home in San Antonio this season. Donn Roach had the hype coming into the season, and he's a good ground ball specialist but he can't miss bats. Smith has been the most impressive guy in the rotation (for now, Wisler just got called up and I'm geeked about that), and the most consistent with Andriese.
Smith has an overpowering fastball, overheard a scout two days ago saying Smith touched 100 twice on the scout's gun in his last start. I've seen 99 plenty on the house-gun; his last two starts he's sat higher than I've read is usual for him (95-97 instead of 92-94). The fastball has enough life that it's definitely a plus offering (in addition to elite velocity, obviously), but his secondary offerings are...developing. He's far from a thrower, he locates the fastball inside and out, and he does throw a slider that flashes plus, but it's inconsistent enough that even I can tell when he gets loose with one. I've heard the Padres think the change up is average, guess we'll see.
It's definitely an interesting move calling Smith up; I'll have to make sure I watch his start.

Speaking of Roach, he taught Smith his sinker. Smith went from close to equal fly balls and ground balls to double the number of ground balls this year. A ground ball pitcher who strikes out more than one an inning and has good control. That is quite a combination for a pitcher.
