Tim Stauffer has had 6 good outings in a row in "AAA" Date | Inn | ER | Ks | April 16 | 6 | 1 | 5 | April 21 | 5 | 2 | 4 | April 26 | 6 | 2 | 4 | May 1 | 6 | 1 | 8 | May 6 | 6 | 1 | 8 | Total | 31 | 7 | 29 |
2.03 ERA Tim has always pitched well in MLB. I imagine the Padres are trying to determine who he replaces. I hope they don't wait too much longer.

long relief, even. The guy has good stauff. Long relief is getting crowded. Tyson Ross (should be there soon) Anthony Bass That is two pitchers who have pitched well as starters. We have a number of options without counting all the young pitching that is rocking in the minors.

I don't know why they don't bring him up. He's proved he can be a MLB capable pitcher and he's dealing right now in the minors. I'd trust him over Stultz anyday.

Stultz 2.99 ERA in 15 starts last year makes keeping him very tempting. The Padres think they fixed what ailed him and he can be a very effective pitcher. You don't get 2.99 type pitchers very often...it would be too bad if they threw one away. That means the Padres will give him a longer leash than they would another pitcher. But at 33 years old I sense the leash is getting taut. He needs to start producing. He had a good game in Chicago 6.1 Inn/2ER. Let's hope he continues tonight.

Padres have a real problem with their 40 man roster. That is why Stauffer is still in the minors. He doesn't have to be on the 40 man roster since he is a minor league free agent.
The problem is going to get worse when Forsythe, Luebke, and Wieland come off the 60 day DL. All 3 must be placed on the 40 man roster.
The Padres really need to make one of those 3+ for 1 blockbuster trades. Kinda like a Latos trade in reverse. I hope they go after Giancarlo Stanton. He has this year and two more in control and is a very very good player.
If those 4 are placed on the 25 man roster we must move 4 players to the minors and remove 4 players from the 40 man roster. Those 4 can be claimed by any team.
The 40 man roster players not on the 25 man roster Yeison Asencio James Darnell Fautino De Los Santos Jose De Paula Jaff Decker Robbie Erlin Tom Layne Rymer Liriano Miles Mikolas Adys Portillo Edinson Rincon Nick Vincent Thad Weber
2 less than 15 because of 2 players on the 15 day DL - Richard and Maybin.

I do agree Thad is an easy choice. Rymer may be moved to 60 day DL - but I am not sure how that works for minor leaguers. Tommy Layne had some moments last year but is expendable too. Jaff Decker is only 23 but has fallen off a lot of lists due to poor performances. Nick Vincent and Miles Mikolas may be candidates too. That is what 4 would look like.

I think Jaff and Mikolas are safe for now. Rymer CAN be moved to the 60 day. Looks like Burch Smith is making the jump though, so Stauffer will have to wait.

While Mikolas, Vincent, Layne are all decent relief options, and they'd likely be snagged off waivers, it's not like the Padres don't have pitching depth to replace them. Smith has a floor of late-inning reliever, Roach will probably be a reliever, Andriese could be better than Bass, 4th/5th starter type or a reliever.
I can't imagine the Padres have the kind of talent to acquire Stanton. The exact reasons you like him are the exact reasons the Marlins are going to expect an Oscar Taveras/Jurickscon Profar type of return for him. He's the reason people go to the ballpark, to the extent that they do, and to move him they'll need someone else who does that.

The Padres can put together a package. Grandal, and Smith would be the type of thing it would require. Florida would love another Cuban.

CALL THE DUDE UP

The Padres have a deadline on Stauffer. By June 1 the Padres either call him up, trade him, or allow him to become a free agent. The Padres have a tough decision on who to expose by leaving them off their 40 man roster. Stauffer won't be the one that is thrown to the wolves. He is too good.
