They signed Peavy to a contract extension too. Then they traded him before he played a single day of that extension.

It's curious to see what happens with Headley. He's tough to value since he's really had one year of unprecedented success at the ML level and a few so-so years. Seems like it'd create quite the range of valuation--with Headley saying he's worth closer to $15M/year (as his 2012 numbers would justify) and the Padres looking at him more skeptically since last year was unexpected.
This supports what I've been saying and what I've felt about the Padres, and that's that it's a new regime with a new strategy. I'm excited to see what they do going forward, but this is an uncomfortable spot for them, I'm sure. Hundley and Maybin's extensions looked awfully bad last year, and now you have Headley who you are gonna have to pay like he's closer to Evan Longoria when he may be closer to David Freese.

Headley doesn't want to deal with it during the season and is deferring any talks until the off season. Looks like the Padres will get an opportunity to see more of him before making a valuation.

And here it is 5 months later.....Headley placed on waivers. Just revocable waivers. It doesn't mean anything about the future. Basically, if a team claims him then the padres can choose to give Headley and his contract to the claiming team, revoke Headley's waiver status, or negotiate a trade with the claiming team within 48 hours. Obviously the Padres aren't going to give Headley away, but you might do that with someone who has a bloated contract (think Vernon Wells if he weren't on a contending team). If someone (the Yankees for example) claim Headley, then the Padres can ask for the sun and the moon in exchange. Hence, it really doesn't mean anything at all. There's no reason every single player on every single team shouldn't be put on waivers after the trade deadline.

A record deal? I didn't even know he could sing. He sure isn't hitting this year.

And here it is 5 months later.....Headley placed on waivers. Deals happen when both sides pretty much agree on the future of the player. Headley thinks he will come back and be as good as 2012. Padres won't be willing to gamble a large contract on that possibility. That makes a trade more likely. Otherwise 2014 will be Headley playing in a contract year.
