When 26 year old Tyson Ross went on the DL, the Padres promoted Andrew Cashner. Cashner in 2 starts has a 2.70 ERA as a starter and has looked good. Tyson Ross in his 3 starts had a 3.86 ERA, which is better than the other 4 starters. Tyson Ross is making rehab starts in "AAA" and should be ready soon. So who is the odd pitcher out?
1. Andrew Cashner back to bullpen after some impressive starts. He only pitched 46 innings last year so I am sure the Padres don't want him to pitch much more than 120 innings or so. So he can't be a starter for long. But he could hold that spot until Luebke is ready later this year.
2. Clayton Richard has given the Padres no chance at a win in 3 of his 5 starts and has an ERA of 7.94.
3. Edison Volquez has 3 bad starts to begin the season. Padres feel the world baseball league contributed since that was time better spent with Balsley in Spring Training. Since then he has looked good with 17 innings giving up 2 runs before a 4 run 5th inning by the Cubs last night.
4. Eric Stults was picked up on waivers last year and pitched great for the Padres - 2.92 ERA in 14 starts. This season, after 5 shutout innings to begin the season he has been bad. He has given up 3,4,5,5 runs in his next 4 starts for a 5.67 ERA overall.
5. Jason Marquis? No!! 4 of his 5 starts have averaged over 6 innings and under 2 runs.
6. Tyson Ross? The Padres really like him as a starter.

Unless they decide to jettison Stults I'm guessing they move Cashner back to long relief to limit his innings while still keeping him ready for a spot start here or there. He has not gotten real deep into games (small sample size, but still) and that puts a strain on the bullpen.

From an article:
Right-hander Tyson Ross, who is working his way back from a left shoulder impingement, made his first rehab appearance with Triple-A Tucson on Tuesday night, allowing three earned runs on three hits and two walks in 1 2/3 innings.
"The pitching line is not indicative of I guess how he threw the ball, according to [Triple-A manager Pat Murphy]," Black said, "but he got his pitch count up into the 40s. If he comes back into our bullpen, we've got to make sure he keeps his length to fill a role in the 'pen of a guy who can go multiple innings if we need him. But his stuff was good."
Ross will pitch again in relief Friday.

Speaking of Tyson Ross...his younger brother will likely be a better pitcher for the Padres than Tyson will be.
Joe Ross Stats 18 years old: 8 starts at "A" Short Season in Eugene 2.03 ERA 19 year old: 5 Starts at "A" Fort Wayne 1.78 ERA
Although he was drafted in the 25th round 2011, he is listed as one of the Padres top prospects. The Padres signed him for 1st round money ($2.75 Million) to lure him away from UCLA. He fell all the way to the 25th round because he was a sure UCLA attendee. 2011 is the last year this type of thing could be done since the new CBA limits money spent on draft picks.

I'd like to see Tyson Ross stay in the rotation for the year. He's done what he needs to do in AAA. Let him learn at the big league level now and bring some stability.

Odd man out is Clayton Richard. He was placed on the DL. But it is just a diplomatic way of getting him into the minors. Going as a "rehab" assignment is much easier to take as a veteran player.

Joe Ross was taken 25th overall, not in the 25th round. He was our second 1st round pick the year that we took Spangenberg 10th overall (compensation for missing out of Karsten Whitson) 2011 was a great year in the draft... Draft pick, Padres prospect rating (according to Jonathan Mayo) Cory Spangenberg (10th overall in draft, Padres 10th best prospect) Joe Ross (25th overall in draft, Padres 13th best prospect) Jace Peterson (58th overall in draft, Padres 12th best prospect) Austin Hedges (82nd overall in draft, Padres 5th best prospect) Matthew Wisler (223rd overall in draft, Padres 8th best prospect) Kevin Quackenbush (263rd overall in draft, Padres 19th best prospect) Burch Smith (443rd overall in draft, Padres 20th best prospect) It is exciting to see some of them start contributing at the higher levels. I wouldn't be surprised at all to see Quackenbush in the majors at some point this year!
