Padres are 5-1 over the last 6 games. One of the wins was over a bad Cubs team but the other 4 were over a streaking Brewers and the Giants. Getting Headley back and having a few ABs under his belt and the return of Quentin solidifies the offense and the starters are pitching a little better. With a little luck this could be a team that positions itself to be close when Luebke comes back and hopefully again retakes the reigns as the Padres best starter. Add a piece late and who knows. Stranger things have happened.

No reason to think these guys can't be right there for maybe a second wildcard or perhaps better with some improvement from the starting staff. Should be a decent year - first time since maybe the 2006 team I look at our lineup and see some hitters and guys that can get on base from top to bottom. Slugging numbers will continue to improve with some of our core middle of the order guys back as well.

If you idealize each member of the Padres team then the best case scenario is we might be good enough to be a couple games over .500.
But like every other team, the Pads will deal with injuries, slumps, and disappointing seasons from players we were counting on.
I've already been to 3 games this year and I'm going to one next Wednesday. That's more games than I went to all of last year so at least I'm going there with the idea that there is a chance we could win. By the time the Padres started playing well last year I was so over the season that I didn't even care.

You can make fun of Joe Sheehan all you want but he's a well respected analyst within the industry and his reasoning behind picking the Padres was that they are similar to last years Orioles. Young, emerging offensive players and depth in starting pitching without any real frontline guys. That being said, I agree with you that they won't reach their potential because almost no teams ever do.

Their over/under for wins was 4 games below this season and they won 60% of their games into September.

The Orioles record in 1 run and extra inning games last year was off the charts, to the stat heads. Some said you will never see anything like that for many years. I'm not sure either way. But I like their young talent. Machado is a young STUD.

It's the results-oriented masses on Twitter to whom he's accountable, which explains his tweet.

Doesn't change his reasoning or the validity of it. It's the results-oriented masses on Twitter to whom he's accountable, which explains his tweet. You can't seriously believe this. Let's recap: Sheehan: Padres will finish first! Me: Padres suck You: Sheehan said they would be good! Sheehan: dumbest thing of my career You: Well he still said it! It doesn't matter if he said it. When somebody says its the dumbest thing they've done IN THEIR CAREER I think all validity is lost.

All I disagreed with you about was how good the Padres would be if you idealized every player and they reached their potential. As evidence, I presented Joe Sheehan's prediction to demonstrate how highly a respected analyst could pick the Padres to finish based on his perception of their talent. I never said the Padres would be "good." You need to focus on what the point of disagreement between us was. If the Padres players are idealized, they're pretty good. Sheehan idealized them, said they'd be good. Whether he disagrees with his prediction now is only relevant to how good the Padres ARE, not how good they could be.

I will go a step further. We don't need career years from our players to be good. The season is not nearly over. The Padres are playing better and have reasons to believe they will continue to be good. This season could surprise a lot of folks. I am by no means writing it off. The offense is playing well enough to win. The bullpen is playing well enough to win. The starting pitching only needs a pitcher or two to get hot for the team to threive. Luebke will be coming back this year. He is the Padres ace. He has been great and could come back and continue that role. Stauffer is waiting in the wings to replace any starter that fails. Don't write off the Padres yet.
