Former NFL player, and announcer Pat Summeral has died at 82 in Texas. He was one of my favorites announcers of all time, and when he teamed up with John Madden. His simple, and to the point expressions made him easy to listen to, and enjoyable too. He could say more with fewer words than most PBP announcers did with tons of words! Will miss him greatly.

I believe he and Tom Brookshier use to do This Week in the NFL at the time The Voice, the late John Facenda, still narrated the previous week's games for NFL Films. Those were the days I tell ya. Not likely to ever to be duplicated again. He, Brookshire, and later Madden were the NFL gameday soundtrack to me, other than the original MNF crew led by Cosell. RIP! Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

Stu, Young 20 something NFL football fans have no idea -- NO IDEA -- what they missed out on. I can still picture Summerall and Brookshier in their polyester suits and circus ties sitting on stools devoid of a desk or any of the high tech studio ballroom tricks and light gimmicks that take place in studios today. They simply sat there and introduced and recapped the previous week's games. Both gentlemen were paragons of dignity and class. Summerall called something like 16 Superbowls. It was the perfect storm of football coverage, background music, and of course the voice of God,the late John Facenda. Here's Facenda doing his take on the Raiders: www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5CTKlF45DsHere's a current comedian with his take of the Facenda: www.youtube.com/watch?v=iPjNYnFiMicAnd here's my favorite Sam Spence NFL Films theme: www.youtube.com/watch?v=WyIHELHwq6II remember the Voice doing a piece on the Cowboys troubled running back at the time,Duane Thomas,to the poetry of Rudyard Kipling's 'If'. Classic stuff. ...Listening to all these guys do weather reports would be something I'd pay to witness. There's nothing remotely close to that today sadly.

I heard a Redskins-Cowboys playoff game called by him a long time ago, the way the mics picked up the crowd noise at RFK, coupled with how he laced his PbP into that sound, with the famous inflection and pauses were masterful. It was amazing. Today's very high quality, slick productions lose all of that.

Listening to them is like consuming a great wine through the ears. I don't know how many Summerall influenced, but I know Vin Scully has. Al Michaels and Bob Costas completely lifted from Scully. Like I said, the young NFL football fans of today are sorely missing out on a great part of the game without these giants of the microphone around, though Scully still is.
