Joe Sheehan of Sports Illustrated picks the Padres. Even accounting for the Chase Headley injury, they have a young offensive core and year-in, year-out, manager Bud Black assembles great bullpens from air.NL's Breakout player of the year: Cameron Maybin, Padres. Already a better player than most people recognize because of his speed and defense, Maybin will take a step forward at the plate and be a downballot MVP candidate.

Injuries and PED suspensions won't make it any easier for the Padres.
Last year I said 70-92 for the Padres. They beat my expectations by 6 games due to a stronger second half.
I'll say 78-84 this year.

I do think SD should be much closer to true contention in 2014. Especially if Weiland and Erlin have the ceiling that many scouts think they have. The rotation could be pretty good.
Quentins knees should be bone on bone by then, so hopefully the ownership spends SOME money on a couple of good veterans to sprinkle in with Headley, Grandal, Alonso, and Maybin. And of course, Gyorko should be an everyday starter if he's what we think he is.
Remember, all franchises are expected to receive an extra $15M-$25M in revenue with the new national TV contracts. On top of what they get now from their own network broadcast deals. Cleveland cited this revenue as one reason they were able to sign Nick Swisher and Michael Bourn this off-season.

Personally, I felt the horrible Jason Bartlett/Orlando Hudson performances at the plate were a huge part of the early season offensive woes. Having instead Cabrera/Amarista and Forsythe to start will help...but of course that part is cancelled out by the lack of Headley and Grandal to start to the season. Nonetheless, I do feel optimistic that the Padres will start the season on the right track and at least finish April with a winning record

I never read any of these other boards; when I took a quick look at the thread title I, of course, thought it was a joke of some kind. The guy was serious? He now has ZERO credibility in my book.

His Maybin prediction looks a little silly so far. Maybin was hitting .091 when they placed him on the DL. It will be a while before he can go to "AAA" to work his way back to the Padres. Meanwhile, after getting into a 10 game below .500 hole the Padres are playing the best ball in the NL West. So his other prediction may not be as silly as first thought. There are positive signs.

Maybin had 33 at-bats...I agree Maybin wasn't impressive in those 33 ABs, and I am skeptical as to whether Maybin will ever reach even half his potential, but 33 ABs is 33 ABs.

He looked terrible and was very dissappointing last year. But you are right 33 is a SSS.
