Kasey is 23. Hopefully he comes back strong and has a nice career with the Padres. It gives the Padres another year of control. So we tradde 23 year old Kelly for a year of 29 year old Kelly.
Please, whatever gods we displeasured, have mercy. No more injuries.

another pitcher injured? Big surprise. THe padres have got to be concerned with the amount of pitchers theyve been losing to injury over the past few seasons.

The Padres did an organizational review of practices and they were in line with other teams. So any additional Padre pitchers going under the knife is no more or less a surprise than any pitcher on any other team.

Not that this guy was much more of a prospect than a suspect, but it's now official: The padres GAVE AWAY Adrian Gonzalez. No question. Kelly didn't exactly tear up the minor leagues. The two AA stops where he got at least 20 starts, he had ERA's of 3.98 and 5.31. He had a cup of coffee in AAA before SD brought him up. Trading away Rizzo for as little as they did sealed your statement. They GAVE AWAY Adrian Gonzalez.

You can't accurately access a performance without considering age. Those who write-off a 22 year old high prospect because of tommy john surgery will usually be in for a surprise.

I'm not writing him off. But the Pads did give away A-Gon. Damn straight.

The Padres still have Erlin, Kelly, and Cashner from that trade. Those are 3 pitchers that could well be 3/5ths of our starting rotation next year. AGon would be gone by now. Instead of nothing we have 3 starting pitchers who are still young and will be with the Padres for a long time. Whether we "gave" him away is yet to be determined.

I believe there was strong interest in him on the trade market. We both know the Padres and BoSox buddy front offices made a sweetheart deal. He wasn't sent to the highest bidder (best package of prospects). Truthfully, I liked getting Rizzo in the deal but was baffled to see him moved for Andrew Cashner (he might be a solid 3 starter if healthy) in another deal between buddies. Rizzo has the makings of a player who might have a very fine career. The other guy thrown in by Chicago is a total stiff who will be bagging groceries at Albertson's in two years. Adrian Gonzalez was a perennial All Star in his prime. Casey Kelly was a guy who appeared on multiple top prospects lists but had yet to show much even in the minors. He still COULD be very good, who knows. Cashner.....lukewarm on him. Robbie Erlin was received (along with Weiland) in the Rangers deal involving Mike Adams. He wasn't involved with the A-Gon trade, but I like him alot and think he could be really good. He'll likely be better than both guys we got for our premier first baseman. And to think we got him for a middle reliever.

Corey Brock of MLB.com reports that the Padres are expected to name Tyson Ross the No. 5 starter over Andrew Cashner.
Advice: Cashner is still expected to be on the Opening Day roster, but it will be as a reliever

In my mind there's no doubt he can be a high leverage relief guy with a great two pitch combo, but if he can be a 2/3/4 starter there's a lot more value in that.

Rizzo's already stroked a homer to start the season. Wish we still had that dude.

And to think we got him for a middle reliever. You are right Erlin came from Texas as part of the Mike Adams trade. I spaced. Reymond Fuentes was the other player. He just turned 22 and the jury is still out on him. He played at 21 in "AA" last year and was less than impressive. But 21 is very young for that level.
