...the ACC is about to get killed by the expansion plans of others. There are reports that the SEC, Big XII and Big 10 are all about to seriously poach the ACC. Technically, if only five schools are left in the ACC, as some have suggested, then they would have to take seven schools, presumably all from the Big East, in order to backfill to a 12 school conference -- and they may not share the Big East's vision of including a couple of outlier western schools in their membership.
Everybody sort of assumed that the Big East would lose Cincy and UConn to the ACC at some point. But where would you be if they lose Cincy, UConn, South Florida, Central Florida, Houston, SMU and Memphis or Temple?
I'm not going to debate what is or is not going to happen to the Big East because I don't know what is going to happen -- and I don't have to nail the right scenario anyway. All that it takes to justify SDSU's decision to come back to the MWC was a rational fear that something catastrophic might happen -- combined with concerns over what options the school would have if it did. If you had made the decision to stay in the Big East, only to see it fall apart, then you would have been left in a conference that was a shell of the shell of the conference that it once was. Worse, you might not have had a road back to the MWC -- or to any other conference not headed by Karl Benson. You may not share that fear, but you don't have to for your admin's decision to be justifiable.
For you stakeholders out there who feel that Sterk should publicly explain the school's decision to return to the MWC, if the concern was that the Big East may fall apart, then I don't think he can publicly state that reason. They've worked together closely and it would be unprofessional to publicly question their viability. There are stakeholders and then there are stakeholders and I'm fairly certain that Sterk is saying things in private that he cannot say in public. Maybe some of you are not such important stakeholders that you are included in those meetings where he does.
Incidentally, I have a feeling that this could go much faster than anyone has anticipated as some of the coveted ACC schools are coveted by more than one conference -- providing motivation for rushing the process. "If we won't invite them now, then the other guys might." The Big XII Commissioner is already on record as saying that the Big XII could go "proactive" on expansion at their meetings next week.
Yoda out...

I think a lot depends on how much money Maryland will owe the ACC. 50 million is a lot of money,

I'm sure more poaching will come. More messes. We could get lucky and get grabbed by the Big 12. If not we wil manage in the MWC. The conf is stable despite a lousy tv deal.

Didn't you hear, Yoda? If that happened, we could just go football independent for awhile. No big deal.
ESPN and FOX were going to get in a bidding war for the rights to our games, no doubt about it.
All worked out.

I heard Sterk chose to stay in the MW because he dreamed of the day he could tie in a trip to Laramie with a family RV trip to Yellowstone and Mount Rushmore.

There is another report from CBS that a BE TV deal is close. www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/blog/eye-on-college-basketball/21609988/report-big-east-is-near-tv-deal-with-cbs-espnReally, they have the lock that deal up prior to more poaching, but the uncertainty is killing them. It will be interesting to see what the final value and length of contract will be. I was in favor of the BE move for all of obvious reasons (better potential for program growth, a national presence, better teams to play in metropolitan areas etc). It was not to be. I will continue to watch the Big East as that situation unfolds.

How do you have so much time and energy to devote to the message board of another team?

Nothing will happen with the ACC until the courts rule if Maryland has to pay the $50M or not. The only exception could be Florida St as they didn't vote for the $50M either so they may try to get out just like Maryland has. The other schools in the ACC are stuck.

Yoda is always there to twist the knife. we are all trying to move on. I'm not twisting any knives. There is not a nee-ner, nee-ner bone in my entire body. Just trying to provide a plausible reason to those who are angry about the decision and still calling for the AD's head. Not everybody is trying to move on... And tecpride00, I begin my workday about 3 AM and go until about 9 PM -- pretty much 7 days a week. Message boards are a break for me. Yoda out... .

All worked out. Fox Sports SD and the Laker Channel want our football and basketball. We could make at least as much as we're getting paid from this $#!+ conference.

I'm sure more poaching will come. More messes. We could get lucky and get grabbed by the Big 12. If not we wil manage in the MWC. The conf is stable despite a lousy tv deal. I do agree with much of what Yoda is saying. IMO I think the Big East is in Big Trouble. When (not if) the ACC loses more teams they will draw from the Big East. The ACC will more closely resemble the Big East. The Big East will resemble C-USA/MAC. This would put the ACC as the 5th best conference and the MWC as the 6th best conference. I could still see an outside shot at some schools out west including SDSU sneaking into the PAC or BIG XII. The BIG XII did add West Virgina. The two largest market areas considered for WVU are Charleston/Huntington, at 501,530 and ranked 63d, and Clarksburg, at 110,050 and ranked 108th. In addition, the entire state of West Virginia has around 1.8 million people. Furthermore, WVU is located 1,400 miles from Austin, Texas. However, they do have good fan support and good football and basketball. So if history is any indicator (using WVU as an example) the BIG XII seems willing to compromise on TV market, population and distance. Several schools in the west are closer, have better TV markets and larger populations. WVU has tradition and quality football that some schools in the west can't compare to yet. Regardless, there are schools in the West that the BIG XII and PAC would take a look at once the time comes. That time for the BIG XII is rapidly approaching. When the BIG XII does expand it will set off another wave of realignment that will likely affect several conferences including the PAC. If and when the Super Conferences are formed it is likely the rules, regulations and the post season format will change. Simply put, never say never. Particularly with conference realignment.

I agree with James that the MWC conference is a sh*t conference. Where I disagree is with how good the Big East is as a healthy alternative.

How do you have so much time and energy to devote to the message board of another team? What difference does that make? Maybe Fresnos board is boring with little traffic. Who effing cares where he posts. His intelligence and sports IQ are much higher than about 60% of our current registered stock.
