Detroit's NBC sports guy, Bernie Smilovitz, showed Maal's dunk and Fisher apparently discussing it with him. He seemed quite impressed.

Steve Fisher: “I watched it on the bus going home, watched it four or five times,” said Steve Fisher, Franklin’s 67-year-old head coach, “and he did a great job setting it up. He had them spread and he knew exactly where he was going with it. They parted perfectly for him to make it work. “That should not happen every game, 10 times a game. But I’ve always been someone who gives players freedom to make basketball plays.” And if he had missed? “If he had missed it, he would have looked awful and I would have looked like I had an undisciplined team,” Fisher said. “But you can’t worry about that.” If Fisher's OK with it, that's all that matters. I still think JF needs to stop doing the "air brakes" move because the refs just aren't buying it any more. Yet he still tries it at least twice per game. He aggravates the hell out of me, yet I'll miss him a lot when he's gone. There's no arguing the great contribution he makes to this team, it just could easily be even a greater contribution with a little more self-control (and I'm not referring to the self-dunk, which I loved). But like I said, Fisher loves him, and that's what counts. I know he would pull him aside if the antics are too over the top, and he probably has at times.

Leads team in points, rebounds, assist, blocks, steal, and gains national publicity that SDSU has never had.

I wonder if those hating on Jamaal saying he should've made an easy layup are the same guys saying Tapley should've dunked vs. AZ

Loved the artistry and athleticism of the The Dunk, but it doesn't make you a hater to ask, "What if he had missed it?" Nothing in sports looks worse than an in-your-face slam that clanks off the rim and goes for a turnover. I ran the play back over and over again because it was a true spectacle--and because it worked. If it hadn't, and if we had lost by one or two, I would've probably been in favor of sitting Franklin for the tipoff tomorrow night.
Everything turned out okay, and maybe as some have said we'll even see a mini recruiting bump from it. But we needed that win more than Franklin needed to be on Yahoo.

I am convinced he did it because it was the best option he saw. The highlight reel was not in his decision tree in my opinion. Sent from my DROID RAZR using proboards

For Jamaal, the dunk was routine, ordinary, an expectation considering the situation. For everyone else, it was much more than that. Deshawn Stephens wasn't even impressed. Dutcher has seen it a million time. But America has never seen such a ballsy display. Everyone will be talking about that dunk....until he does it again even better IN THE TOURNAMENT!
