The biggest risk of all is the MWC. I can NOT see on the horizon any world that would see the BE doing worse than the MWC. The BE is not so stupid as to create a bankrupcty-in-waiting, which should be the new name for the MWC. Im pretty sure all MWC presidents as a whole have thoroughly gone through the TV deal and where the money is coming from... Id say they are more aware of what is happening than you do! Take this into account, obviously Sterk has reviewed the deal, where the money is, and where its coming from as he makes his decision.... Enough of the hate already therein lays the problem - the only contract that exist today is the one between the MW and CBS (for 4M / year). There is no other contract for the other MW games, its all TBD. Same with the BE contract, TBD - so either way we are making a decision based on best estimates. Not the ideal scenario but it is where we are.

It's a presidential decision. Y. That. And this. The BE has been working like heck to get ESPN and BYU to reach some kind of agreement to get the Borg in for football only but obviously to no avail. Word is ESPN has been trying to leverage that to get the BE to cave on re-upping for a song - which ain't Stairway to Heaven. In lieu thereof, the BE is apparently going to exacerbate its Tulane faux pas and add Tulsa and even maybe, cough, cough, Arroz No Con Pollo y No Con Futbol Bueno Tambien. If that roomer is true, it's almost as if the BE is encouraging SDSU not to stay. So the only guarantee is this. If SDSU actually does return to the MWC, idiots like Krebs at UNM will see it as capitulation regardless of the terms. So will some here. So will every non-Aztec and non-Bronco on the MWC board for whatever that's worth. So be prepared for an onslaught of butthurt trolls, amigos. Why is Krebs an idiot?

Hirshman and Sterk have shown no sign, not one instance, of being played since this all began. They have made their decisions based on what they beleive to be the best interest of THE UNIVERSITY, not just one sports team. They have done their due dilligence and HAVE NOT been pushed around. Anyone who thinks the contrary just has not been paying attention. I trust they will use the same due dilligence in this decision and will not be put in a position to be anybody's whipping boy, no matter how much other presidents may want that.
there are so many considerations in this situation. Tv contacts, travel, bowl ties and payouts, academic reputations of conference partners, growth potential, and on and in. It is far too easy to sit back and criticize. But we need to trust the people who hold the future of our UNIVERSITY in their hands.

All of these realignment scenarios seem to have a Kim Kardashian type of commitment from the involved parties. Here today, gone tomorrow.

Many of us however have a much different opinion than you do and are therefore not as sanguine or trusting that they really do know what they're doing. They ARE academics and that alone almost disqualifies them from using proper business judgment.

What moves in this regard have been made by Hirshman or Sterk that are questionable? What moves have they made that make it look as though they've been pushed around or groveled? The past is the past. Some of us live in the present and look toward the future. Also, Sterk is not an academic. And before Hirshman came here, as Provost of his former university, he oversaw athletics. I think he's made it very clear that a stable football program and athletics program is vital to the university's success.

Basketball fans do not get it. basketball is zip fiscally. I could care less. There is only one thing that matters winning in football, nine to ten game s a year whether it will be in the big east or the MW. alos Rocky has to start winning some Bowl games he is 1-6 in them. The delusion Boise and Aztec fans share in common that a success under one coach mans a permanent success, what happened to The Aztecs after Corryell Gilbert,or Fresno after Tark.
This ruining basketball stuff is mindless,as I have said before what power conference is Gonzaga in? For years teams like Niagara,Georgetown,Old Dominion USF etc were in nothing leagues. You play strong out of conference and win.

I'm crossing my fingers we can stay in the MWC. MBB has worked too hard to help make it a premier conference, only to pack up and leave once it reaches it's peak. It's not a premier conference but I think SDSU is staying. Certainly better than the Big West and the MWC will be competing with the Catholic 7 and to some extent the A10 for best mid major. No real surprise, all of the speculated BE additions have been in the east or midwest. We would have heard rumors of western schools being pursued if SDSU was going to stay in the BE. ..Sent from my GS3..

Been through this dance man... I say "my vision? is to keep going on the same path we are currently on and hope for a better tv deal in '16/'20 while praying we get an invite from one of the 4 mega conferences when the time comes for expansion" And you say, "well, we can't stay on the current path because of our fiscal situation. Football will fold in the MW and we'll end up bball only in the BW anyway" And I say, "you are completely wrong, and jumping from one s#!++y fball conference to another won't help us in realignment talks anyway." And you say, "you are an idiot, of course with CA's financial situation and the horrible MW tv contract we are going to lose football if we stay the course" And I say, "no, we won't" And then we are at an impasse and one or both of us steers off into ad hom's and then some washed up third-stringer with his best days behind him hops in and says "wahhhhh t-shirt fans why wont anyone come to football games big east is god merrrrrrr" And the circle of life continues. If SDSU wants to better capitalize, GET FANS TO THE GAMES Kind of hard when we had three home games in a row against 1 win teams this year. I do agree that SDSU has to get better on the field and stay better.

As The World Turns. The latest, newest gospel true rumor has hit the board and once again the sides have chosen up. Fans are just that, fans and it's truly great to be a fan. After all, that's why we all follow the Aztec's, we are fans and it is our chance to second guess everything from play calling to conference alignment and back again. Reality is that there is very, very little accurate financial information out there as contrasted to an awful lot of conclusions/opinions. The bottom line to all of this is exactly that, the bottom line. And, the bottom line is very rarely impacted by the personality of the person delivering the spreadsheet, be it the MWC or nBE Commissioner, the Pres. of UNLV or the SDSU AD. Their ability to process that information may be in question, but it will be/is very difficult for those of us outside the realm of accurate information to judge how well they have processed the real facts. Every time I go about trying to come up with one of those hard and fast opinions (which, by the way, are always great to have at times like these) I have a hard time doing so. There are plusses and minuses to both the MWC and the nBE from what I can see. Speaking simply as a fan, and without reference to the bottom line, it seems to me that basketball is not well served by leaving the MWC, but on the other hand it looks to me like it's ultimately a doomed conference. Plus, I've never really liked it anyway from the football perspective. Then again, my view of the football end of it may be influenced by our inability to compete in the MWC except for the last few years. That and my lack of enthusiasm for the front range schools (meaning no disrespect here to them, simply that I just don't find any commonality with them). So, all in all, I guess (a) I can't figure out which way SDSU is headed based on the few facts I have, rumors to the contrary notwithstanding and (b) neither choice seems to be that healthy so I'm hoping/praying when the Pres. and AD ultimately make the call they pick the one that turns out to have the best short term impact while we wait for the next conference merry go round. The next game of musical chairs is what it's all about and we have to find both on field success and someway to finance our program during the interim--our druthers as to who we play during these seasons is probably secondary. If some proper concessions can be made for SDSU to come back to the MWC, then this deal can have some potential. We are not Boise St, so I see no football concessions being had.
If anything, a basketball bonus system should be worked out, mirroring somewhat the football bonus system, but without any team getting preferential treatment. This could really benefit a lot more teams and we actually could benefit from it.

@mcmurphyespn MWC's Craig Thompson told @espn if SDSU opts to return to MWC, league presidents must approve by 3/4 majority. Expects decision by Jan. 31
So even if we opt to return, the MW still has to vote to approve us.
f x x x that. ON TO BETTER THINGS

If anything, a basketball bonus system should be worked out, mirroring somewhat the football bonus system, but without any team getting preferential treatment. This could really benefit a lot more teams and we actually could benefit from it. All MWC concessions to Boise State football were concessions that applied to the entire conference, except that Boise State home football games would be negoiated outside the current CBS contract. That is a good thing for the conference. The conference gets extra money from those games. The fact that Boise gets a bigger cut of any nationally televised game is a win/win for the conference. The big change for the Aztecs is teams that go to bowls get 50% of the payout. Instead of (possibly) losing money by going to a bowl game, the Aztecs could have an addition to the bottom line. MWC should adjust how Basketball income is distributed. If it is right for football, it is right for basketball. I favor having 50% of money from NCAA credits to go to the teams that earned them. That is a simple change that rewards teams that decide to invest in basketball.
