We can be cheap and pay the arbitration amount. Or, we can step to the plate and sign a 4-5 year deal for many more bucks. What do we do? Oh, what do we do? Let's see if the new owners step to the plate or if we are back in the JM cheapness old days.

$8.575 million for next year. This buys them some time to decide if they want him around longer and to work out the contract details with him.

They should trade him now. We will never re-sign him if he has a good year and his value will never be higher.

We have Headley under control this coming season and the following. There is no rush. This could be the peak of his value. That is a good time to trade a player but not a good time to sign him long term.
If he improves (or maintains) his level of play his trade value increases.
If this is his peak, he will become more affordable.
If he has a career ending injury, we save $60M.

How do we have him under control for next year? We signed him to a one year deal.

How do we have him under control for next year? We signed him to a one year deal. One more year under club control = arbitration eligible. After his sixth year is complete and his contract runs out he can become a free agent.
