I'm soooo sick of trying to have discussions with fans of any other school that can't resist bringing up the irrelevent point that we haven't won a national championship ever. So, trying to get an actual discussion started about the X's and O's of these potential games. I will openly admit that I am not a basketball strategist but I'd just really value a discussion that focuses on matchups and things a coach would go over to prep for a game.
WHO'S WITH ME!?!?!?!

Mississippi is going to try to cause turnovers, its what they do really well, and in that scheme they also defend against the three very well. I think our bigs match-up well with theirs on the block, so if we need to we can steal a few points in the post to free up the outside shot. But I dont see them being able to handle our perimeter players for the most part anyways. So as long as we can avoid turnovers we should be okay offensively.
Their offense is predicated around a mad bomber shooting a ton of threes, and some athletic bigs who can run the floor. Well, once again I think our bigs cancel their out (they are athletic but then again so are we). So it comes down to shutting down Henderson on the perimeter; now if he is making shots there really is little you can do to stop someone like him, and he will shoot A LOT of them. But he isnt a great pct. shooter by any stretch, and I am fully confident that X, Rahon, and Shep can give him fits with their length.

So far we have:
1. Don't overlook an opponent 2. Score more than your opponent does 3. Play sound defense
I think we're good. Mods, go ahead and close the thread.

I really hate these tournaments. The possibility of random upset is so strong. Three games in four days is going to sap some emotion from the best of teams. And when you need to win the emotional game, you gotta hope you've got some left in the heart.
It's probably the most important part of this puzzle. All the teams there can play basketball. Some of the teams are definitely better than some of the others.
… who gets lucky and when they get their 11-0 run will tell the tale on Christmas Day (and before).

Looking forward to tomorrow & the start of this tourney! I want to see a great win on XMAS day vs. Arizona or Miami or whoever else we might be playing. UNDEFEATED #4 Arizona goes down & is outhustled on Defense by the Stingy Aztecs (can't wait for that headline XMAS day)

SF should not be a problem unless the Aztecs play down to the competition. They seem to do so at times: Aztecs by 17. Next, MS should win, but Indiana St. may be able to pull it off: MS by 5. Aztecs will be ready to go against this night. MS only has two players to worry about. If they are on, then they have an outside chance, if not...Aztecs by 9.
All of us hope that AZ will be in the final. It won't be that easy for them. Miami is the type of team that can play like world beaters at times. AZ wins anyway. SDSU vs AZ; if we come to play...the guards that is...and hit the boards...we win. SDSU has no fear of AZ having beaten them last year. Aztec by 5.

Okay USF- They have virtually no post presence on offense, despite some okay size. They will keep the ball on the perimeter and set a ton of ball screens (roll, pick-n-pop, etc.) Their best player Cole Dickerson is a bulky slasher type and their only real threat on the offensive boards. We should be able to just stay in front of the guy, sag off if needed, and be fine. Worse comes to worse foul him because he is horrible from the line (although thats not really our MO). Parker is a decent shooter for them, but doesn't take enough shots to be much of a threat, I think if we stay in his face outside the arc he will settle for 15 footers, which is fine by me. I don't know why Avry Holmes hasnt been playing a lot because he is a talent; they also have a 7-footer, which could give us issues, but he really doesnt do much. I think if we just keep Parker from hitting too many 3s and stay in Dickerson's way they shouldnt score much.
Offensively for us, I think we'll be fine. They do nothing that could really affect our shot making or ball handling, so as long as we don't shoot ourselves in the foot we'll be okay. They do however have a pretty awesome fan/rap video on youtube that everyone should check out.

I don't think Arizona will even make the final, remember who predicted it first.

3 games in 4 days is tough for any team. Hopefully the Aztecs will coast against USF, allowing our starters to get some quality bench time. We will need them more in the next two games.

stay focused on each game, avoid the scenery and looking past the first game. You don't advance in the winners bracket if you lose the first game. Would guess the coaches may watch the first game Ole Miss/ Indy State game. Play solid D , and smart basketball.

My guess is that we need a strategy to beat USF before all else. The main strategy against USF is to make sure that the Aztecs show up at the right time and place. Then it's on to the semis. There are always upsets in these kinds of tounaments, but I'm 99% sure that this game will not be one of them. USF isn't even an average WCC team this year. Last year they were a good team, but they lost 3 players to graduation and 6 (SIX!) players transferred out of the program.
