After the dust has cleared on our second straight bowl loss it's time to take a look at where we are in our football program. As I said earlier I was not terribly shocked by the outcome of the Poinsettia bowl. BYU has one of the best defenses in the country, they showed that against Notre Dame and held both us and Boise State to no offense touchdowns.
Our offensive line is only average at best, it gave up a huge amount of sacks not to mention quarterback hurries. It does a good job run blocking, but if you don't have the quality passing game it makes it nearly impossible to be a very good team. Nevada was not a very good team, Boise State just like BYU had a huge drop-off in offensive productivity.
Now Andy Ludwig was the same offensive coordinator who put up all those passing yards and touchdowns when he had Ryan Lindley as quarterback. So I don't think you can blame him for our anemic passing offense this year.
I don't know if Adam Dingwell is the future or not given his inexperience ,and a poor pass blocking and a very conservative short passing game we used.they did not trust him to open up the playbook.
The one thing I really didn't like was the endless repetition and rotation of wide receivers. Of course you need to have some depth but you've got ti find guys who can run the routes yet separation and catch the ball even when it's difficult. If I were him though I'd put about 20 pounds of muscle on the guy give him four good receivers and have them throw to those for over and over and over again. Adams accuracy is just not that good but that could be improved upon.
Brown and Sampson were making the tough catch with regularity: Locket, Butler, Sandefer and Ruffin were not. They just kept dropping balls that should have caught. Now Ruffin is a talent but he had a broken hand. I am not saying that these guys were poor players, but I can remember almost no clutch receptions where the ball was being contested..
As Rocky himself said and any other coach will tell you, players don't get better by not playing. We need to find three or four receivers will catch the ball in contact who will make the diving catch who will make the difficult catch. The fact that our NFL tight end caught less than four balls a game says it all.
This is an age of offense of innovation we've seen what that can do with Fresno State and San Jose State in one year. This team is going to have to average over 200 yards per game on both passing and running to be a consistent bowl team..
As for defense we are average there as well . However I have hope that with a lot of young talented because on the d-line and linebackers, we could have a much better defense.
The question is the safety and corner-backs. At least two of the cornerbacks we have recruited this year in my opinion have no chance of being anything more than special team players. They're not fast but not particularly tall and are not overly athletic. Also, the three, three, five defense required outstanding defensive backs not only in skill but in football intelligence.
There wasn't a game this year that I can recall where there was not at least one or as many as three voided coverages and that is with players who have been in the system for four years.
You know when designing weapon systems one of the limitations on the engineering is can an operator understand it sufficiently to utilize it, if iit takes PhD in mechanical engineering to figure out how to implement the greatest weapon system ever devised then you might as well stick with a Brown Bess musket.
I think it's safe to say the defense should be better next year since King Holder is improving and hopefully Josh Wade will get another year and Walter little brother and a couple others will step up. Certainly our defensive line should be much more solid. Our offense though is going to be 90% Adam Muema. From what I saw of Chase Price is not likely to be productive against big defensive lines and linebackers unless he gets excellent blocking. So let's hope that Garrett and Desaan step up.
