I know that this may induce a sudden tourette's moment, but, here is what I'd like to see happen with the next round of conf. realignment. So, hear me out:
That SDSU & BYU form a package alliance one with another to make their combined cases to enter the BIG XII.
Alone, singly,...they can't do it. Combined, I think they offer something that would be interesting for the BIG XII.
BYU's natural rivalry is Utah...that is gone, done.
BYU's new forming rivalry is Boise State...looming.
BYU's historic 'rival' could be SDSU...have history, have bad blood, have desire to beat each other to a pulp....this 'could' be a great 'rivalry' under the right circumstances, namely, same conference and play at the end of the year during rivalry week.
The nations 33rd market (SLC) has been invaded by the PAC-12.
San Diego #28 market, also in PAC-12 territory, has played second fiddle to the LA market too long, and this could play to your advantage.
For the BIG XII to remain relevant and a top teir confernece, they need a championship game, and two quality teams and markets to join their conf. That would be BYU & SDSU.
The BIG XII is competing AS A CONFERENCE with the PAC-12 for pecking order. Why not hit the PAC-12 where it hurts the most...in their freaking front yard!
Plant a BIG XII flag on I-5 "Entering BIG XII Country"
Plant a BIG XII flag on I-15 between SLC/Provo - "Entering BIG XII Country"
When Texas rolls into San Diego to play the Aztecs, when Oklahoma rolls into LES to play the Cougs...you think that your fellow California sports fans won't fill the stadium, watch on TV. Think some of those 5-star athletes won't be migrating South to San Diego instead of L.A.?
The San Diego and SLC markets are way better and offer way more TV's than those of Kansas, Oklahoma, Iowa, and West Virginia.
For recruiting purposes, for TV/market reasons and open up new ones, for competing with a rival CONFERENCE, to weaken that very same competing conferences dominance in their own front yards, to steal athletes from that competing conference...to add quality programs to your own conference.
SDSU/BYU has: history, tradition, bad blood, hall of famers, great PROGRAMS, and quality educational institutions.
Together...I think they could make a strong strong case and kick the PAC-12 in the nasties at the same time.
It makes a LOT of sense to me.
