Either way, Fresno State is a solid brand What, pray tell, makes you say this? Is it their athletic excellence over decades? Is it their name recognition in the state of Iowa (or for that matter, outside of the Central Valley)? Is it their academic reputation? Is it a "destination city" to which fans from the east coast will gladly travel to see their team play? Is it their big-bucks alumni base? Is it their marketing savvy? I just don't see any "brand" there let alone a solid one. John, can't the same thing be said about SDSU? Our athletic excellence over time is probably better than yours. And our facilities certainly are better. San Diego may be recognized more in Iowa than Fresno is but I doubt that San Diego State is recognized much more than Fresno State is. Neither of us is an AAU member. Even if I grant you the edge that you claim in academics, the edge is not so large as to make those conferences that value academics reach out to you on the basis of your academic reputation. And if it is about television, then ratings are not a function of academics anyway. San Diego is probably more of a destination city than Fresno is but Fresno is one as well. We are proximate to two of the more popular national parks. I'm not sure what you consider to be a "big-bucks alumni base" but we've raised far more money for athletics than you have -- both for facilities and for operations. You've tended to rely more on student fees. Judging by the complaints that I've seen on our respective boards, I not sure that either of us has any significant "marketing savvy". If you are looking for an Ohio State, then good luck. I would argue, however, that there are no Ohio States out there -- if there were, you'd be defending the MWC right now as a full member of that conference. I'm not saying that we are better or more attractive than you are but I think we are comparable to you in terms of our attractiveness. Yoda out... .

Where I'll disagree with Yoda is that my notion is that Fresno State is recognized more in Iowa than SDSU. Fresno has repeatedly beaten BCS caliber opponents (USC, UCLA, Wisconsin come to mind), they've been winning bowls for quite some time. If I'm not mistaken, they've had a Super Bowl winning QB. Their "Anyone, Anywhere, Anytime" mantra hasn't paid off lately, but for a good solid time up through around 2006, it worked wonders for their national recognition. And, oh by the way, their fans travel a helluva lot better than we do. So, yeah, their brand is definitely more well-known. I'm not happy that it's them and not us that do/have done these things. It's just the way it is. We can catch up pretty quickly in the brand department -- but we've gotta start taking care of business in places like Ohio State, Wisconsin, Notre Dame, hell, even slip past UCLA just once. I'd also disagree with Yoda on his overall facilities statement. But football drives the bus and overshadows all other arguments.

As to facilities, I'm more familiar with ours ( www.gobulldogs.com/trads/fres-facilities.html ) than yours, but I was principally referring to the fact that we have a school-owned, fully paid for, on campus football stadium.
