That should be one of the two starters they are looking for.
Jason Marquis did an OK job for the Padres last year.
He pitched 3 months after being aquired off waiver wire from Minn.
93 innings 4.04 ERA.
1 year $3 million.

No bad 1 year contracts. I think the Padres like his clubhouse presence too--not sure if I subscribe to that school of thought but I know the front office things part of the struggles in 2011, after the surprising 2010 team, was losing veteran clubhouse guys like Eckstein. Marquis is a fine pitcher. Nothing special but he'll do.

Great, a team loaded with mostly "OK" and "Nothing special but he'll do" players, can't wait for another 'be happy with .500' ball season...

Great, a team loaded with mostly "OK" and "Nothing special but he'll do" players, can't wait for another 'be happy with .500' ball season... If you need to sign 2 starting pitchers and you get one for $3M, that allows you to get another for more than you would otherwise spend. I am hoping for a signing (or acceptance of salary) that will please even the JYPs of the world.

Another non factor pitcher. The Padres are cornering the market on mediocre and oft injured starters.

I don't really get what everyone expects the Padres to do.
Their position players are pretty sound. They could use an improvement at SS, but if they think Forsythe is an option--maybe he is? He was hitting well at the end of the season. Personally, I doubt the sustainability of that but the market for SSs is pretty bad. They could make a trade for Asdrubal, but the asking price for that Cabrera is really high and with the market the way it is, I'd bet the Tribe gets the haul it wants. Other than that, who's available at SS? Stephen Drew? He's not worth overpaying since Everth is still a viable option.
The Pads wanna see Gyorko hit at the majors, wanna see what he's got. Tough to blame them given how well he's hit in AA and AAA. Grandal/Hundley/Baker at 2, Alonso at 3, Headley at 5, Quentin at 7, Maybin at 8, Deno/Venable at 9...what are you gonna improve?
Pitching is in much the same position. Pads already traded Werner for pieces. So you have Leubke, Cashner, Richard, Volquez, Marquis with Wielend, Kelly, Bass coming along.
I get the bitterness that many harbor for the many years of deceit from the front office. But what would you have them do? Sure, I'd love it if they signed Greinke too, but that's not a realistic expectation. Would you prefer they spend $80M/4 years for Kyle Lohse just so they can say they did something? I think prudence is wise in this instance.

The pitching staff is loaded with too many what if scenarios for my taste. There is no clear cut ace here. None of the young arms have proven they can put in a full season without breaking down.
What we have here is a mess. Spend some money and fix.

Yeah, let's be the Dodgers and pay 147 million dollars for a guy like Greinke. No. Thank. You.

The off-season is far from over. The Padres can also trade to get that starter everyone wants. Latos was traded on December 17 last year. So getting an ace-type starter is still doable.

Yeah, let's be the Dodgers and pay 147 million dollars for a guy like Greinke. No. Thank. You. They are paying more than that since they are well over the limit on Luxury Tax. Dodgers 2013 salary currently stands at $225M The limit is $178M The Luxury Tax is 17.5% for first timers. (225-178)*17.5% = $8.225M in 2013. That tax goes up to 30% for 2nd year, 40% for 3rd, and 50% for 4th year. It is likely the Dodgers will be paying 50% in the 4th year. That makes the contract much more expensive than what "G" is getting.

So, not just a waste of money, but a COLOSSAL waste of money.
