Anyone have good insight on this guy? He clearly has the added size / girth that we need in the front court...I've heard good things that he's got a good motor and is willing to bang the boards and scrap on the court...I've never really seen or heard that much about him though....Will he step in as a starter right away or is it going to take a while for him to get minutes on this team...Anyone heard any feedback on his play in practice? It's just practice, but we heard enough about JJ O'Brien that we new the players thought he was going to be a great addition...I wonder what Johnson will bring to the table when we start squaring off against our conference opponents.

Yea I'm surprised we haven't heard much about him. He is going to be key for us, especially if Deshawn gets in foul trouble or a fluke injury

He is really not that big of a guy for post. He is listed as 6 foot 9 and 235. He will get banged around by teams with big bulky postman. There is not much difference in size between Spencer, Stephens, and Johnson.

Here you go,
He has a good perimeter game, and has been working hard to get better in the post and with his back to the basket.
Shooting 3s
Dunking

Defense
Giving Justin Tuck a piggyback ride at Torrey Pines

my guess from what i've read.. he'll be a bit more of european style player than a banger - could be good to have a big that can play 10 ft away fromt he basket

There is not much difference in size between Spencer, Stephens, and Johnson. To us he looked at least 2" taller that DS. He also looks a bit thicker than he did last spring.

James Johnson gives us an experience big guy that allows Deshawn to play the 4 and gives us a conventional line up that can match up with any school in the country. O'brien is listed at 6'7 but he's really around 6'5. We can play a line up of JJ, Chase, Jamaal, Deshawn and Johnson.

I heard Johnson was a bona fide 6'10" with his shoes off. He gives us a big body in the middle. Definitely a major piece of the puzzle.

Johnson definitely has a little bit of height over DS. At the BB banquet last year, he honestly looked similar to Garrett Green heightwise. Dude is tall!

I have always envisioned him to be like a Mo Abukar type player. A tall forward that also likes to shoot from outside. But I have to admit, I have not seen him play much yet. Could he have played in the exhibition games?

From what I've seen of him....and looking at the whole group together at Midnight Madness....he looks like a pretty legit 6'9 and exactly the same height as Skylar Spencer...He also looks like the thickest body we have on the team right now.
Also, JJ O'Brien is definitely bigger than 6'5....unless Jamaal Franklin is 6'3 and Xavier Thames is 6'0.....I think 6'7 is pretty legit....Tim Shelton last year however, was definitely shorter than his listed 6'7.

I was particularly interested to hear if anyone had heard anything about how he is doing in practice...good or bad......I've seen the practice vids and heard some summaries...but it doesn't tell us a whole lot. Dwayne Polee was supposed to be our marquee transfer this year and so far it clearly looks like JJ O'Brien was our most important pickup. There was lots of good feedback about JJ over the past year in practice...I haven't heard much about Johnson which may not be the greatest sign.

O'Brien is 6'7" in high heels.
Also, that's good if Johnson is a "euro" type big. Probably means he can shoot and is a decent ball handler. Spencer and him will compliment each other well.

Could he have played in the exhibition games? Just as Abukar gave that team a third starter that could score to go with Heath and Slaughter I believe Johnson will provide what we need with this team which is a post presence. In the first scrimmage he showed the ability to get offensive and defensive rebounds with a quick outlet. The team has the scoring ability he needs to just play his role in the interior. I hope he is eligible by the time they play in the Hawaii tournament, if they end up playing Arizona they will need him Arizona's frontline is impressive watching their game the other night.
