Below are the lyrics. What do you guys think of it? I'm curious for the board's thoughts. Beautiful melody but to be honest, I only remember hearing it sung one time while at school and that was at my graduation.... Hail, Montezuma We with loyal hearts our homage pay; Proud, working and glorying, In the spirit of the Aztec name; To thee, San Diego, And the fond Traditions old and new, A tribute raised in lasting praise and steadfast faith; Hail! Montezuma.
Hail, Montezuma, We salute thy glorious destiny; Far seeing in company days, Men and women strong who live in truth; To thee, San Diego, To the Black and Scarlet we'll be true; An echo comes from Aztec drums through all the years; Hail! Montezuma. goaztecs.cstv.com/trads/sdsu-almamater.html

Wonderful song. It's too bad not many people know what the Alma Mater sounds like or what the lyrics are.

I think that Disney copied it for use in their snitty movie, "Pocahantas". At least the last stanza.
(For those lazy pac-fudge fans from UCLA, fran and ollie, the word "stanza" means a phr...? I means. Hmm? It means that the Aztecs are so much better than those, pesky, arrogant little stanfturd flunkies!)

Our little group sings it after EVERY game!! It was a requirement to learn it, along with the Fight Song, for the fraternity that I pledged in the early 70's. Unfortunately, the band starts playing it the second the game is over and the PA announcer is still yammering, so you can hardly hear it.
I love when we play service academies because both teams stand in front of each band to hear their respective Alma Mater. At those times, we truly can sing along as the band plays it. What's funny is to see our guys when they come back over to our side and all they want to do is sing the Fight Song. When the band starts with the Alma Mater they all have a "WTF is that" look.
I think we should begin a new tradition where the band waits until the team is in front of them before playing the Alma Mater and then the Fight Song. Most schools do it that way and the fans actually sing along with their Alma Mater. Also, at many other schools the team will gather even if they lose for the Alma Mater. If we win, great, add the Fight Song. If we lose, singing the Alma Mater still shows respect for our school. The band currently plays the Alma Mater, win or lose, our group sings it win or lose, and the players and coaches would set a great example if they participated in the Alma Mater - win or lose. Currently, if we lose, they don't come over at all.
One last thought. Wouldn't be a bad idea if the Pep Band played the Alma Mater at Viejas. If The Show participates, it will become relevant quickly.

Up tempo the alma mater and use a bit of pop jiggle and wall-lah! A hit.

I was in the band (football) for four years in the 70's. Back then the band would do a post game show on the field after the game in a block formation. We would then play the alma mater as well as a couple other tunes facing different directions. Then we would march in formation towards the tunnel and do the post game parking lot routine like they do now. The no fun liberals still had an affect on traditions then and in four years I never even knew the fight song and alma mater had words, much less heard them.
I like what Ohio State did in 2001 when I did a roadie to Columbus. They played the alma mater in the pre-game show. It was great hearing 80,000 or whatever people sing the alma mater. A goose bump moment and one of the best college atmosphere experiences I've witnessed. Like someone said above, at SDSU it's played seconds after the game ends to just sort of get it out of the way. Most people are leaving or have left and it seems like an afterthought. How about making it part of the pre-game show? At least there would be a few more people there and they'ld be paying more attention to what's going on on the field as opposed to how to get out of the parking lot.

Also, the Marching Aztecs play it at the end of football games. Then Fight Song as needed.

They also play it after a football victory with the players in the student section, just before they sing the fight song.
What do you guys think of having the lyrics on the jumbo screens at the Q while they play it so that everyone can get accustomed to hearing/learning it???

Many schools play their alma mater before their games. I think that would work best for us, since staying to the end does not seem to be a priority to a lot in attendance. Texas does that (at least they did the last time they were in the Holiday Bowl), and I think one of the PB teams did as well. We may never get anyone to sing the entire alma mater, but if we could get everyone to yell "Hail, Montezuma!" at the end, it would be a success.

Sweet. might be pushing it a little, but could even be cool to have someone, or a group of people, leading in singing it so people can get used to hearing it and join in. New traditions make it fun u know.

Many/most big-time schools show the alma mater lyrics on the big screen when it's played before & after football games. Is a GREAT idea for us to do the same!!!!!!

A solo vocal (guest) over the band playing the melody would be awesome imo. It would give the listeners the correct phrasing of the lyrics and encourage those to sing it. It's tradition and feel like the whole PC nazi movement of the past had tried to take the fire out of it. To re-introduce the alma mater, a flyer could be handed out to all those coming through the ticket gates. Nothing like an invite to sing it to get ones attention....or maybe NOT and save the printing cost... Either way it's tradition. Aztec Tradition.
Go Aztecs!
