I've never been one to place that much importance on the number of stars a potential recruit has during the recruiting process, I tend to trust that the coaches can evaluate a player/personnel far better than a bunch of hacks whom sit out in the stands trying to gauge whether or not the guys skills will progress, or translate, into college ball.
I'm certain, especially those of us who grew up in San Diego, we can say out of experience that the number of stars speaks nothing of a young mans makeup, or character. Dillon Baxter comes to mind, as does Matt Bush. In any event, out of curiosity, I wanted to, as many have before me, look at the past 4 recruiting classes to see what has become of said star system, and how relevant they truly are to the players level of talent.
in 2008 SDSU signed 22 high school kids to football scholarships. 4 of those athletes were rated as 3 star players.
of that class of recruits those that surpassed their 2 star grade were as follows: Embernate, Jerome Long, Dominique Sandifer, Rob Andrews, DJ Shields.
In 2009 we signed 21 players to football Scholarships. Out of that class all were ranked two stars but 4 that were ranked 3 stars.
IMO this was a very fine class. Kazee, Escobar, Lockett, Mcfadden were all ranked as two star players. To me, thats enough to tell you that these star ratings are biased towards the larger conferences.
Hillman was also in this class. He should have been a 4 star player at the least.
ANthony Miller was also in this class. He was suppose to be the the player to watch. ranked 3 stars. Didnt even come close to playing up to expectation.
2010 in all appearances seemed to have been a gold rush! we landed 16 3 star players out of a class of 27 athletes.
Muema, Fely, Quigley, Dingwell, Ruffin, all players whom have had strong impact
in 2011 we signed 23 athletes to scholarship, 13 of which were ranked as 3 star players.
the only player from this class to see much playing time is Meredith.
in 2012 we signed 22 players to scholarships, 6 of which were rated as 3 star players.
Daniel Kottman is the only one to see much playing time.
and here we are, awaiting the results of our 2013 recruiting class. Signing day is in the not to distant future and thus far we have 16 commits. 5 of which are ranked as 3*** players.
why the sudden lack of 3 star players over the last few years?
Was Hoke that much of a draw?
Is Rocky that much of a deterrent?
Is this star system a crock of $#!+?
What credentials do these dudes have whom grade these players?
does the credibility of these men that evaluate the players ever get affected after a couple of misses in either direction?
