I truly believe AJ wants VJack to sit out until his suspension and the roster exempt list (or whatever the hell that 3 game suspension list is called) so he's fresh for the playoff run.
After the season Vjack moves on and we get a compensation pick.
I agree with some talking heads in that AJ has no desire to trade VJack at all. After the season VJack is gone.

The problem here was likely that the deal that he had agreed to was a 1 year deal. If a team is basically renting Jackson for the year, they aren't going to trade away what SD thinks he is worth. There is a bottom limit to what he is worth and that is a third round pick (the least we could be compensated when he signs elsewhere). So there isn't really a "waiting too long" to trade him. Even if, over time, his trade value diminishes.

sports.espn.go.com/nfl/news/story?id=5604433&campaign=rss&source=NFLHeadlines Feinsod was critical of Smith, saying "Archie Manning had it right," a reference to Manning's reluctance to have Eli Manning play for San Diego after being drafted by the team in 2004. "They call [Smith] the Lord of No Rings for a reason."
Contacted by ESPN, the Chargers declined comment.

LMAO..."The Lord of No Rings"....I love it.
AJ Smith is an egotistical asshole.
Give the guy a deal if you want him, or take a 2nd rounder. That's a good offer.

Great businessmen put aside ego in business deals. They just do whats best for the business deal.
Can we say we're a better football team without VJ? NO.
But if you don't think hes worth $30M, then TRADE HIM for value.
Hell, Randy Moss didnt even fetch a 2nd round pick.
---Cue K5 coming to defend AJ Smith as a great GM. ;D

I think AJ is using the Brandon Marshall trade as his road map to any trade of VJack.
The Donkeys got a 2nd rd pick this year and one in 2011 from the Dolphins for Marshall.
Again, as I stated above I believe it's AJ's intent (like I really know what the hell I'm talking about here ;D) is to either get a 2nd round pick, or keep VJack and get him in with six games left in the season for our stretch run.
After this season VJack is gone one way or another.

That's the same issue with the Chargers deal.

Reports I've seen say that AJ was willing to trade for a 2nd and 4th. Less than Miami gave for Marshall (same off the field problems as VJ but also on the field baggage). Looks like VJs agent burned the bridge though, he will not play in SD again. Though it doesn't really sound like he wants to. Since he isn't going to report this year, he will remain a Chargers property if they get the contract situation figured out. (Though that does not look likely.) OK, but were the Vikings willing to give up a 2 and a 3 without an extended contract? That's been the whole issue, that the Vikings wouldn't give up a 2 and a 3 like AJ wanted unless they were to sign VJ to an extended contract. So VJ and his agent were ready to sign that, but not AJ.

I personally think it was bad call not trading him but if he didn't get the right deal... We don't really know what he was offered by anybody because all we're getting is VJ's Agent's side of the story and you can take that with a grain of salt.

Not just that, but I understand that if he doesn't report to the Chargers this year then he remains a Charger's restricted free agent for 2011. AJ Smith got burned on Brees and Turner. He ain't gonna letting it happen again with VJ (and/or McNeill). Some team will step up and offer what's necessary to get the trade done.

One he won't play for a prorated amount for 5 games and he still has to serve two games once he does sign, He needs at least 6 games in order to get his full year.

This was my point above stating I thought he'd come back for the last six games to accrue the points for the year, which affect things like his pension, post playing medical and free agency or veterans minimum status in the future. That one year time accrued can mean a lot down the road.

Jackson, serving a three-game suspension for violating the NFL’s substance abuse policy, will be able to play after San Diego’s sixth game of the season.
Read more: www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7020000482#ixzz10PhO6mXf3. If you were Chargers general manager A.J. Smith, what would you do with Vincent Jackson? Steven: A.J. Smith should have traded Vincent Jackson this offseason and moved on from this situation. Instead, Jackson and his contract will continue to hang over this team until a resolution is reached. With the uncertainty surrounding the labor agreement for next year, reaching a long-term contract was going to be difficult for both sides. However, it's clear Jackson wants to get out of San Diego, and Smith really has no interest in keeping him around. San Diego's asking price appeared to be a second-round pick in 2011 and a fourth-round pick in 2012. I think Smith needs to realize the going rate for receivers in this league. Santonio Holmes was traded for a fifth-round selection, while Brandon Marshall was shipped to Miami for a second rounder. Jackson is a nice player, but he's not worth a second-round pick. Both sides are being hard-headed, and neither comes out of this situation a winner, as Jackson sits on the sidelines and the Chargers are missing their No. 1 receiver. Nathan: If I was the “Lord of No Rings” A.J. Smith, I would pull a Mike Shanahan and make Vincent Jackson run 300-yard sprints like Albert Haynesworth. That would be the only way to enlarge Smith’s already inflated ego — which is the point of all of this Jackson-Smith common-name nonsense, right? Braden: Frankly, it's not like Smith has any room to criticize prima donna athletes for acting like idiots. He has had his own moments. However, Jackson's trade value has now decreased after the deadline, so if the move didn't happen before the deadline, then Smith certainly will not budge now. He has to wait him out or pay him. Jackson can either suit up in Week 11 so that his free agency year kicks in or he can risk it with the impending lockout. Either way, Jackson comes across as a selfish, spoiled brat while Smith looks like the pompous, overbearing bureaucrat. (Which is funny, cause it's true.) For me, the bigger issue is Marcus McNeil. They have to have him to win a title in my opinion. www.athlonsports.com/pro-football/19826/nfl-5-burning-questions-week-3
