(This was initially in response to another post. But after giving it some thought, I decided it deserved a posting of its own) How do we fill the Q for future football games?With Big East competition looming around the corner, its imperative to enlighten the public of our beloved Aztec football team. Remember, football is CASH COW for entire Athletic Departments, so the need is very REAL... and the need is RIGHT NOW at SDSU! If I were placed in charge of marketing for SDSU football, I would help "Fill the Q" in this manner: I would schedule a concert during "each and every" home football game... (minus the KGB Sky Show). The "Homecoming Concert" would be held exclusively after the game. A portion of the concert (a teaser) would be performed at halftime, with the balance performed immediately after the game. I would also arrange for band members to appear alongside television and radio broadcast crews (hello CBS, NBC, KOGO with Ted Leitner) during each game as advertisement for the band and for SDSU. It would inform the nation that at SDSU football games, we truly know how to put on "THE SHOW" and "PARTAY!" SDSU would be the trendsetter in combining weekly concerts with college football games. (Growing up, I always loved the Orange Bowl halftime shows, and envisioned the same happening at the Q in some form or another). Heck, we're located in Southern California! We should be the trendsetter and trail blazer for the Big East Conference, as well as the nation! I would rotate major artists with performers not so well known, (or expensive) as an easy way to "Fill the Q". Ticket prices would be raised accordingly to cover additional costs... but who wouldn't go for a game and a concert on a Saturday Night? Fans already pay extra for Sky Show tickets, so I don't see any problems in that regard. Remember, the goal here is to attract additional people to SDSU "Big East" brand football games. Some of the concerts would be set aside for popular "Tribute Bands" or specialty performances to add good variety. Here are some examples: 1.) Major bands and performers like: Elton John, Jennifer Lopez, Rihanna... at least twice a year, mixed in with others that have a Southern California flare, like: "The Beach Boys", "The Eagles" (Hotel California), "The Mammas and the Pappas"... etc. 2.) Tribute Bands like: "Who's Bad", an extremely popular Michael Jackson Tribute Band, who's performed all over the world... including our own Del Mar Fair. Native folkloric Aztec dancers from Mexico, or a combination of Native American dancing and music could also be performed... like those performed at Knott's Berry Farm (that group will perform on the side). 7.) Seems like you've put a lot of thought into this. Why? Because I've been attending Aztec football games for years, ever since the Brian Sipe and Haven Moses days, and I'm tired of seeing only 30,000 people in the stands, especially when we're on the verge of our first MWC championship!!! I was at the game again on Saturday afternoon, and honestly, the Q looked hollow. I travel 3 hours each way to attend the games. Qualcomm is such a huge stadium, and I'd like to see it filled to the top and rockin' loud and proud during Aztec games. Our team deserves the best that we can offer, even if it includes new fans who occasionally show up for the goodies... like concerts, giveaways, the Sky Show, etc. I love Aztec football and I'm so very proud of our team and our coaching staff. But I think its time we as the Aztec faculty, staff, alumni, students and dedicated fans "spice up" the games to a major league level... to show those on the outside (including television networks) that we really do mean business and that we belong on the big stage of college football. Yes, I understand it begins with a great product on the field. But that's what we've been given this year! We've won 6 games in a row! We defeated the 19th ranked team in the nation who was a rediculous 77-1 (I believe) at home over the past 11 years. We've been playing with a Sophomore back-up quarterback and Sophomore running back. Our team was even chosen to finish in 5th place in some of the publications. What more do you want? We may be young and inexperienced, but we're beginning to dominate games in certain areas, and are on the verge of doing something most Aztec fans have never seen before. An Aztec Football Championship! Honestly, we need to advertise our city, our stadium, our school and our brand of football so much more than we have ever done in the past. We need to stop thinking small time and finally graduate with honors in this one needed area. Attendance. In order to be one of the "Big Boys" of college football, we need to "look" the part, as well as play the part. Filling the stadium is the first major step. The team hasn't been able to do it by themselves, which is sad. Its time we helped our team (as well as our entire SDSU Athletic Department) and ensure the Q gets filled on behalf of our dedicated athletes and coaching staffs! People may ridicule my suggestions, but I don't see them making any effort to come up with better ideas. We normally have an additional 45,000 seats to fill on any given Saturday at the Q. Go Aztecs! - Aztecjeff The passion to make change i applaud, but i just dont see how those concerts would be feasible. If AZTECS football made themselves more visible to the community of San Diego thru-ought the year to create more hype and momentum, it would pay dividends. Signage around town, billboards, community events, etc. But I agree, every saturday should have a popular theme and should require the same level of work, promotion and investment that the sky show does. The Aztec Village should be upgraded majorly and make it in a location that is not separate to regular tailgaters and connect to the Warrior Walk. Bottom line is, the games are played in September, October and November. Each month has seasonal themes that can be taken advantage of like the september heat, oktobeerfests, halloween, etc. Either way, keep winning, keep promoting, and let the football bring in the fans. |

I like the thinking outside the box. The only downside would be cost. An Elton John, Rihanna, et al. won't play for free and could easily commandgoo a few hundred grand to play. If it costs $250,000 we would have to sell an additional 20,000 tickets at an average price of $12.50 to break even. I don't know what our split is from concessions and parking but that would make the breakeven come down.

It would appear that Aztecjeff is putting more effort into this issue than is the administration's PR department. Using a number of his thoughts might, in fact, bring a deficit for awhile. But so what? Utilizing a loss leader may be what it takes to draw more people consistently, until the team can do it on its own merits. |

I like the idea of "a" concert a year. Not something every game. And it is definitely not a halftime deal. But
You don't need to place the concert at the first game, sky show, or homecoming. That leaves three other games to place an after the game concert.
It's a good idea to have one game a year, probably late in the season to keep younger folks coming to games.

Have a competition between the greek organizations, the frat and sorority who consistently throws the best tailgate for that year gets a trophy and bragging rights. That would get the students to show up, as well as help build the atmosphere.

We need to create a "San Diego Football/Sports VIP" seating section for all past and present "professional" San Diego sports figures, coaches and families... and combine them with past and present SDSU athletic teams... together with current local community college, high school, pee-wee and Pop Warner league "football" coaches, players and families. Comraderie and rubbing shoulders with the greats of the San Diego football and sports community would do wonders for the Aztecs and their future "local" recruiting. It would be the "who's who in San Diego" section of the stadium, and all would be able to bask in the attention together. Which future college or high school football player wouldn't want to sit in the "VIP" section with the past and present greats of San Diego athletics? Just think of it. A section specifically dedicated for the likes of the Aztec basketball teams, soccer teams, tennis teams, swim teams, etc. along with the past greats of San Diego and their families, ie: The families of the late Don Coryell, Marshall Faulk, Tom Ables, Fred Dryer, Dan Fouts, Hank Bauer, Kellen Winslow, Stan Humphries, Ed White, Bill Walton, Lloyd Free, Tony Gwynn, Steve Garvey, Graig Nettles, Jerry Coleman, Dick Enberg, Dennis Conner, Juli Veee, Brian Quinn, Steve Zungul, etc. Encourage all in attendance to wear their respective uniforms in order to be recognized. Combine this group with all current area "football" players (must also be in uniform) and their families. You get the idea. The larger the turnout, the more you expand the "San Diego Sports VIP" section. I'd make it a focal point on the Big Screen, multiple times per game (kinda of like the way tv crews focus on Jack Nicholson at Laker games). We all like to watch "The Show" at SDSU basketball games, with all those wild and crazy students holding up faces of well known personalities. This would be our "Live San Diego Sports Show" at the stadium. Of coarse, no one would be forced to sit in that section... but if you did it just right, and made them all feel welcome and recognized, it would be an opportunity hard to pass up! The TV networks would eat it up as well! I would also create pre game tailgate activities among the entire group, to consistently recognize them for their athletic and community achievements, involvement and participation. - Aztecjeff |
