New HC is former Bama OC Jim McElwain. Last week, McElwain called out his team in the Denver Post. He expressed concern about the "heart" of some of his players. They responded by playing better defense yesterday but still losing to Fresno in Ft. Collins 28-7.
Record: 1-5; haven't won since beating Colorado in their opener, 22-17, although they haven't played Hawaii or UNLV yet.
Unimpressive stats: (1) are surrendering 214 ypg rushing, (2) are averaging just 3.1 ypc themselves, (3) tailback Chris Nwoke's longest run of the year is 14 yards, (4) have allowed 22 sacks, (5) have been outscored 68-10 in the first quarter.
At QB is walk-on senior MJ McPeek, who transferred in from Kansas State, where he never played a snap. Against Fresno, McPeek started his first game since leaving Aurora HS. He's played OK in taking over for Garrett Grayson, who broke his clavicle and props to the guy for perseverance, but he can't be considered a threat of any kind.
If we are as motivated for CSU as we were for Hawaii, this game should be similar. We won't score as much so I'll say more like 38-14 and I anticipate the opening Vegas line to be about SDSU -18.

He called out the administration before the year for building an 80 yard practice facility because he couldn't figure out how to possibly run a practice in such a situation. You hire a guy that comes from the lap of luxury, he better damn know how to get his fingers dirty - this guy strikes me as not capable of that. We'll whoop 'em

I didn't know about the calling out of the administration. Nothing like endearing yourself to your bosses early on. Like he couldn't have just complained in private and maybe gotten them to agree to expand the thing in a couple years if it was a BFD?

He whined about it during his first f'n spring ball to the press, said he had a practice to check it out and it was completely unusable. (seriously, you can't figure out how 105 guys can use 80 yards by 53 a couple times a year?)

denver.sbnation.com/colorado-st-rams/2012/4/3/2922876/jim-mcelwain-indoor-facility-colorado-state-football-2012this just sounds like a guy who isn't going to get it done at a place like CSU or most schools: "I've got to really evaluate," McElwain said... "And to be productive and successful, it doesn't do us any good to practice in here." The Colorado State indoor practice facility cost an approximate $13 million to build and 72% of its 66,267 square feet are dedicated to the football program. Despite that, the two-year-old facility forced the CSU football team -- with 103 student-athletes on the roster -- to change their practice plans because of space limitations.
"The guys adapted well," McElwain said. "Obviously, it's disappointing that it's so small that you're not able to actually get a full day's work out of it. That's why we had to condition at the end, because we weren't able to actually run a practice."

So I guess he wanted 100% of it dedicated to football. Way to make friends immediately with your peers in other sports.

they also paid a staggering 1.4 mil a year for him, when they have been the lowest revenue generator in the MWC for many years

I could be wrong but I think the old Chargers practice field ( SW corner of QCOM) was well under 100 yards...

We all know how much pull a head football coach has at any given university. As was pointed out, he came from Alabama and the amazing facilities they have there. He has seen what they can do for an athletic program. He is trying to light a fire and get support for upgrades to his school's sub-par facilities. He is just pointing out what others around the program are also thinking. Personally, I would love to see something like this out of Rocky. We all know that SDSU's sports facilities are sub-par, especially with our move to the BE. After some research, it appears that SDSU will have, by far, the poorest athletic facilities in the Big East.

If we spent 13 million dollars on a facility and the coach trashed it we;d all run him out on a rail. Make it work

The guy could have been the HC at Fresno State.
A team with Carr, Rouse, and other very talented players. He choose to take the contractual guarantee and hooked up with CSU. He could have looked at the talent and schedule of Fresno and Said, the bonuses are almost guranteed with that roster.
So when he contracted up CSU for those $'s, you could see the train wreck at CSU forming.
No balls, no glory. Fresno did the right thing and got a coach with fire and incentive to deliver and not bitch about a practice facility.

I went to the trouble of watching McElwain's post-Fresno presser. He praised his guys for playing their hearts out after being very disappointed in them the prior week. Went on to joke that he better like them because he checked and John Fox down in Denver wasn't going to be able to provide him with any free agents, then hesitated and said that's OK because he wouldn't want anybody else anyway. Much longer than the pre-question comments most coaches make and it just felt awkward and the opposite of the very scripted comments guys like Bellichick and Meyer always have.
I notice he hired Dave Baldwin as his OC. Bad move. Baldwin's career was on the ascent for a number of years when he went from HC at CSUN to HC at SJSU to OC at Cincinnati to OC at Michigan State but it's been going downhill ever since.
