Making the bowl is what put the program in a downward spiral? This is a joke, right? State backed into that bowl game when the then AD was able to convince the Bowl committee a significant number of Aztec supporters would attend the game. On a cold, windy day, the game was pretty much lifeless. The only thing red and black crossing the opponent's 50 yard line in the second half was an Aztec pom pom blowing in the wind. No, I would say following that bowl game, the program pretty much fell into an abyss. And though it never takes much of a reason for me to go to Vegas, this game could have been mailed in. I'm not sure about the game but the problem with that season was that after it ended, Bay gave Tollner a 10-year extension. The result of that was Bay waited at least one year if not two too long to fire Ted. And then, like Chuck later, Tollner insisted on SDSU honoring the guarantee that he be reassigned within the athletics department to work on special projects (like has backswing maybe). IIRC, SDSU was therefore obligated to pay Ted $150K per year for busy work. That sounds like peanuts now but it sure wasn't ten years ago on the heels of two terrible attendance seasons and that $150K could have helped Craft hire a better staff. As an example, Craft was only paying position coaches like 80 grand back then. Just gotta add that one of the wonders of the world is how a guy like Bay ever got to be the AD at a school like Ohio State.

That's nice that he is recruiting well - never heard that one before. He hasn't beaten a good team in the last 3.3 years. On this board, they would be wheeling out the guillotine for that.

The only team we lost to that I expected to beat was SJSU and that was because the special teams imploded. SDSU is going to win 3 of it's next 4 games. Maybe the board will settle down a bit then. The first two games was pretty much true to form. Lose to the elite conference match-up, I watched the team bitch-slap a tomato can, but then I watched them find, yet again, new and creative ways to lose to a decent but beatable team. I can only assume they will win this weekend, my point being there is nothing to indicate at this stage which direction this team is going. As I've been forced to do for years now, as tempting as it is to project, I take 'em one game at a time. (For as long as it matters anyway).

The difference between Hoke and Rocky is that Hoke never lost to teams we were supposed to beat, ie San Jose St., UL Lafayette last year, Wyoming last year. I'm not really counting Hoke's first year because of the last 4 seasons that was far and away the least talented. THIS is what makes me very nervous about Rocky because it's a very disturbing trend. 3 already in a year and a half. Neither one ever won a game that we weren't supposed to win, which is ALSO disconcerting. I think this brings up a good point. 2010 was probably the first season since 1991 where the team didn't lose a game that it should have won. Obviously, the Missouri game and 3rd/4th meltdown in the rain versus Utah could qualify but the Utes and Tigers were ranked and SDSU wasn't exactly favored to win either of those games. I remember that Missouri game too. After the bad losses to UNLV and Wyo in 2009, there was a growing thought among AztecTalkers that Hoke couldn't finish games. The 3rd quarter BYU replay controversy was the best thing to happen to Hoke's growing reputation among Aztec fans for not finishing strong. By the time everybody got done huffing glue, Hoke's team had won 4 straight which included the first over a ranked team since 1996. While it may be a bit lofty to expect SDSU to win every game where they are a clear underdog, I don't think it is unreasonable to expect the team to not have any bad losses. I think the number of turnovers, untimely special teams gaffes, and comically bad pass defense over the last two weeks qualify the last two weeks as "bad losses". Yes SJSU and Fresno are good teams but the similarities in which the Aztecs lost are just too stark to ignore. The team can turn this thing around, but it is not going to be easy.

I'm not saying he isn't recruiting well, I'm just saying that doesn't always translate to wins.

To think that it isn't better to start with 4 star recruits is silly. Bottom line, Rocky needs a bunch of 4 and 5 star recruits to possibly get ranked. A good coach can do it with 3 stars.
