Most prognosticators probably had Torrey Pines as a heavy favorite to beat the Vista Panthers tonight. After all, Torrey Pines had beaten the team that had beaten highly regarded Helix. And, in case you were unaware of this fact, Helix absolutely stomped the Panthers two weeks ago. It was beginning to look like a very bad year for Dan Williams' Vista team. Guess what? It did not play out that way.
In a game featuring two very strong defenses, the Panther emerged victors in a 2-0 win. That's right. . . TWO TO NOTHING!. The Falcons muffed a snap from center in a punting situation in the second period that resulted in a safety. That's it, not an offensive point was scored the whole game.
Vista's offense did manage a couple of drives, but they came to naught. One very big positive for the Panthers was the return of tough running back Jacob Bedford, who ran for nearly 100 yards. Nevertheless, this was a game in which the defenses dominated. Yes, Vista came close to scoring a TD a couple of times, but the Falcons would not yield.
I still can't get over it! ! ! 2-0 ! ! ! When was the last time that happened in local HS football game. Or in a FB game at any level?
Time will tell whether this improbable victory marks the beginning of another Panther turnaround such as the one they mounted a year ago when, after for an 0-4 start, they won 7 of their last 9.

By the way, the remarkable play by play will be available at hitekradio.com by Sunday (hopefully). The game will be archived and available on demand.
And it was a fantastic game. It reminded me of a Padres home game in 1996 when they hosted the Atlanta Braves, and a pitchers' duel ensued. The Padres defeated Greg Maddux 1-0 in a game that finished in about 1 hour an 50 minutes. It was a great game, even though there was almost no offense.
Tonight, Vista showed a fair amount of offense - they just went for it on 4th down at the Torrey Pines 30 something on one drive and came up short, and went for it on 4th and goal from the 2 only to have the play blow up with a fumble. Jacob Bedford played a great game. He had a 60+ yard touchdown run called back because his right foot just barely touched the sideline. A couple inches made the difference between 2-0 and 9-0.
Another interesting note about our webcast - I was flying solo at Dick Haines Stadium, with AztecWilliam at home adding color commentary. (He had to run the computer equipment due to unforseen circumstances.) Apparently my play by play was good enough that he could actually provide insightful and relevant color commentary from 20 miles away! It was actually a fun webcast.

Wow. There was no coverage of this game anywhere. This may be the only time you see a 2-0 game in football, and it was an exciting defensive battle, but no coverage at all other than our game reports? You get your high school football coverage here at Aztec Mesa!

Aside from a couple minor technical glitches it was a pretty good webcast of a very good (and very memorable) game.
