I was pretty frustrated with the game last week. After a few days reflection, here’s where I’m at.
You can’t blame refs for a loss, I suppose that means you can’t blame the refs for a bad win either. But hey we played good enough to win. We were up 8 to 18 points throughout this contest and the game was never in doubt. It was a hell of a lot closer than I expected.
Penalties killed any shot of a blow out and ya I thought the refs should have let the boys play. Offensively we were good but far from perfect. Hands to the face pulled a TD off the board and forced our punt. Then deep on their side, a hold to kill a converted 4th and 1. So we scored only 14 points in the second half. Good to see Butler join in on an overall good night for the O.
On the other side, another hands to face extends a ND drive for a FG. PI and roughing extend the other drive for a ND FG. So we’re only up 15 at half. The D comes out and stops them 3 and out on their first 2 possessions. Then the weird offside call on the punt extends their drive for TD when we would have had the ball at mid field. Nobody jumped so it must have been a lineup deal. Why did it take a full minute to talk it over with their HC. All that should be needed is, hey they lined up in the neutral zone, you want the ball back on the 10 right? But no, they talked and pointed, this and that. Weird. So be it.
Yes the D needs to tackle better, Yes the 4 man rush with zone behind had trouble. But penalties took it from an off night to a horrible night.
So what happens this week?? I think the defense rebounds and we win. Obviously talent is different but let’s look at ND vs SJSU. ND is big, experienced and mobile, SJSU is not.
ND has an OL that averages over 6’6 and over 310, with 3 seniors who have combined to Start in 63 D1 games prior to this year. They have a senior mobile QB who this year has rushed 20 times for 90 yards.
SJSU OL averages 6’3 and 282, has one returning starter and no seniors and combined to Start 17 D1 games prior to this year. They have a bounce back QB from UNR who has never run for a positive yard. They’ve given up 10 sacks and he is -30 on the year.
So I’ll say that with our speed and their size, and a week of Rocky on their ass, we will see a return to a solid defensive game. Aztecs win by 10 or more.

Pretty much where I'm at too. I was pissed on Saturday, who am I kidding, I'm still pissed but it wasn't as bad as I'm remembering it to be.
If I'm pissed I'm sure the staff and kids are insane right about now. I think we'll see their best performance yet.

UND had 13 points from 3rd or 4th down drive extending penalties and we had one TD pulled because of penalty... It was much more of a 56 to 28 game which we would all feel a lot better about.
Still, there was a time, not that long ago when we would have lost that game

My mid-week thoughts are the same. The ND tape will be used by teams to exploit our pass defense all season long.
Fortunately, our offense is looking strong so all we have to do is outscore the other team.

After watching the game recorded, i think Ty Detmer was RE-incarnated into that quarterback.
I Don't see that happening two weeks in a row.

Small, elusive QB with arm + Big O-line + quick receiving corps + lousy defense = BYU of 91- 92 = North Dakota 2012 Indeed, I felt like I was watching the 52-52 tie game all over again. At least we didn't run the 46 defense. Oldie Out

Not sure what to make of the team so far having played a mediocre Washington, a horrific army team and an above average 1aa. San Jose is, sadly, a similar team talent wise, so I'd guess we'll learn the most about the team this week

Mediocre Washington? Really? ? LSU is da' creme of the crop. Losing to the Tigers in the bayou is no shame. SJSU is going up against the best team they've faced so far. You figure.

What's missing from all of the game analyses I've seen on this board since last Saturday night? Giving the opponent credit for playing an outstanding game, that's what. The notion that because they're FCS we should have beat them handily is nonsense.
I fell into that trap myself BEFORE we played them and BEFORE I had seen a single down of UND football. After watching them, I now know that they have an outstaying college QB, a couple of receivers that can play on almost any D1 FBS squad and a pretty damn good coach. They played with heart and discipline. It doesn't diminish our squad in any way by admitting these things.
Did they expose some of our weaknesses? You bet! That happens whenever you play a good opponent. but it also gave us some insight into our strengths. They didn't even try to run the rock after awhile. We DID get pressure on the QB, he was just really good at escaping and re-setting his feet to make a good throw. WE absolutely destroyed them with our running game and I feel MUCH better about Katz when he has time to set and throw. Escobar was so wide open on a couple of plays you would think he had a force field around him.
If I take away one negative it's that our DB's have trouble with big receivers. I noticed in the UW game and I saw the same thing with UND's big guy. other than that, Football is about adjustments. We'll adjust, SJSU will adjust and we'll see what happens Saturday.

You figure. so how would you describe Washington then? And since you bring up LSU, they lost by 38 funnin points and scored a mere field goal, that's pathetic. THat's a 6 or 7 win team of things go right, they could easily be 2-4 or even 2-5 and hope to run the table at the end of the year

Afan,
Totally agree. North Dakota is a GOOD team and their record the rest of the way will prove it. We need a big crowd for SDSU to win this. I'm guessing 40k.

We need a big crowd for SDSU to win this. I'm guessing 40k. I'd be surprised if we top 40K....but the crowd isn't going to decide the game. Hey can one of you savvy defensive minds provide some detail on the typical zone coverage we run behind a 4 man rush? I think mcfadden let is WR go deep on the first play staying in the short out zone and that allowed him to beat the slot guy to the ball. So in a typical set with our starters, who has what zone?? Is it kinda like a tampa 2 but with Berhe taking the middle and Fely rushing one of the gaps?

just replayed it and it was zone. Looks like tenhaeff rushed with the DL, jake and vaness took short middle, and Berhe was deep middle. Interesting that on one side it was mcfad short and siluano deep on the strong but they went Wade deep and Pinkins short on the weak side. I guess that makes sense to keep 27 near and let your playmaker 2 control the hot corner. Interesting. I'll have to pay may attention Saturday.

It was nearing halftime when my friend and I noticed the score was 35-17 (same as the halftime score of the 52-52 tie). We could only think, "Oh #$^, not THIS again..." Fortunately, UND made the mistake of kicking a field goal with 0:23 remaining in the half, so the haunting parallel was shattered - but I think there were a lot of us drawing similarities to that horrible evening vs. Detmer and Ol' Pruneface.

It was zone, and Leon McFadden let his man go deep and stepped up to intercept the ball from McGill (the slot receiver) as he came into McFadden's zone. Pick Six! Touchdown Aztecs!!!

True they were playing at home but that was a game SDSU could have taken if not for the 8-10 errors made in the 1st quarter. Gotta beat the pac when your turn comes up! JMO GO AZTECS!

Fortunately, our offense is looking strong so all we have to do is outscore the other team. Ah.... with a couple of exceptions our remaining opponents do not have the offensive weapons (QB, OL, WRs) we faced against UND. Let them try. I think our pass defense will be fine save the BSU, UNR, ***AND SJSU*** games. However, SJSU OL doesn't have the size of UNDs and hopefully not the experience. SJSU will be a challenge too
