The Cardinals have always been a thorn in the side of the Padres. Their fans are great. They come in large numbers to Petco Park splashing red here and there all over the park. On the field those fans have been rewarded. But things have changed in Padres land. Last night starting the 7th inning Cardinal fans were leaving the park.
When one large group of fans were streaming up the isle next to my seats I called over, "These new Padres aren't nearly as fun, are they?".
Since June 27 the Padres are 40-26 while the Cardinals are 35-30. The Cardinals 13.0 game lead on June 27 was too big a hole to overcome but the Padres have cut that lead to 8.5 games. Sure it is a moral victory but it is more than that, it is a sign of things to come. The Padres have done this with a very young team while missing key pitching pieces. This is a preview of 2013. It was interesting that the Chargers score was exactly double the Padres score for a while at the Park.
Chargers 22 Raiders 6
Padres 11 Cardinals 3
Headley was at bat with 2 on in the 8th. If he had homered it would have been 14-3 - quite the football score. Both Maybin and Forsythe had 2 At bats needing a hit for the cycle. Maybin needed a triple and Forsythe needed a home run. It looked like Forsythe was trying.
