I have to give Bruce Bochy credit, his Giants continue to win, even after the Melky Cabrera suspension as of this date, they are 4 games up on the Dodgers.
Terrific manager.

Having a $131 Million dollar Payroll helps too. Giants are 13-6 since Cabrera was suspended on August 15. Cabrera replacements have been pretty bad.

NL West standings by month (W minus L) Month | Padres | Giants | Dodgers | Arizona | Colo | April | -10 | 2 | 9 | 1 | 0 | May | -8 | 1 | 4 | -6 | -8 | June | -3 | 6 | -6 | 6 | -9 | July | 4 | 0 | 0 | 1 | -10 | August | 8 | 7 | 0 | -3 | 3 | September | -1 | 1 | 1 | -1 | 1 | Total Year | -10 | 17 | 8 | -2 | -23 | First 3 months | -21 | 9 | 7 | 1 | -17 | Last 3 months (so far) | 11 | 8 | 1 | -3 | -6 |
Giants have been pretty consistent. Only July wasn't a winning month but that wasn't a losing month either. The Padres have improved every month from the prior month. Too bad the season isn't 8 months long - the Padres might win it Dodgers started strong and the Padres weak, but since June 1 the Padres are 8 games over and the Dodgers 5 games under .500. If the Dodgers had the Padres record since June 1, they would have a 2 game lead on the Giants ;D

Bochy is a very good manager. I am not qualified to rate how good, or terrific...but in my opinion, he does a good job getting results from his talent.

However, one of the things that I didn't like about Bochy was, he would yank starters too soon and not let them pitch through a jam in mid innings. But overall, I like Bruce. He does a good job with what he has to work with. Considering what Bud Black has had to deal with in regards to Moores over the last few years, I think he is doing a pretty good job as well.

Fans see such a small portion of the things that managers do. On field decisions is just a small part of a managers job. The social / leadership part of being a manager is often overlooked by the fan.

Agreed.
I also think Black has done a fine job, considering the payroll restrictions and talent gap he has faced for much of his tenure. I assume he's back next season.
