i'm relatively new here - i just can't believe the number of 'fire rocky', 'we're doomed' threads that have been started. one game into the season and everyone's done. we had high hopes going into this last game, but we all (realistically) knew a win would be tough.
being completely objective, rocky is doing something that has a lot of people watching. also, we didn't get savannah state destroyed - not only did we comfortably cover the 16.5 point spread, but 14 of washington's points were scored in the first thirteen minutes of the season. other than the fumble, we had the huskies under control the rest of the game.
and rocky's gambles - yeah, they're risky. but say that this all worked out the way we all had hoped. we would have won the game and everyone (not just san diego, but certainly espn's highlight reels as well) would be talking about the ballsy coach calling the plays for sdsu.
also, sdsu's 4th quarter touchdown was the result of a 4th and 10 that they went for, and a 4th and goal on the 1. credit +6 points to the risk payoff column. it's not all bad.
so we lost a game. maybe there's some kinks to iron out. but i'm willing to bet rocky is going to stick to his guns for *at least* half of the season so buckle up and try to enjoy the show. we have a coach that's taking unorthodox chances to improve our program and get us some positive attention. even after a loss, i'm proud that that's what our program is about. we're 0-1, not 0-8. i'm still going to be standing at my seat on saturday cheering for every 4th down that rocky has the stones to go for, not rolling my eyes and groaning when we miss.
yes, i'm optimistic that this is going to work out, but i understand that it's a long shot (if "long shot" hasn't been used as a headline somewhere by now, i'd be amazed). but my hoping this works is no more ridiculous than looking for replacement coaches one game into the season.

There is a culture of sarcasm on this board that comes from the decades of gloom around the football program. Most here believe Rocky is safe, and this team will go to a Bowl.. We are just bitter that we could never win the big games VS, BYU, Miami, UCLA, USC, Ohio State, Michigan, Notre Dame, Missouri, and on and on.

It's mostly just a handful of pen-fifteeners who have to post the same $#!+ a dozen times in six different threads.

Aztec89,
I think you nailed it but Rocky needs to get it done...meaning a minimum BEast Conference Championship and then a National Championship. Anything less is unacceptable.

Just a bunch of armchair coaches and monday morning quarterbacks around here, it seems.
With that said, most of it is just reactionary. There are a lot of older fans on here who have seen much worse throughout the years, and perhaps there is a fear of going back to that despite our two years of relative success.
I understand the need to criticize, that's fine, but a lot of it is just too over the top. Then you add 15 threads of the same thing with everyone trying to give their two cents and it look like a disaster.

To answer your question, yes it is always like this after a loss.

Next week there will be "yea, but" posts wondering if 1-1 Rocky gets fired if we don't beat the Fighting Sioux by 40+.

Unfortunately, yes it is always like this after a loss. It was a huge shock to me when I first joined the board about three years ago. I come from Northern California where it takes a lot before we turn on our own. You know - like an actual losing season or something. Usually more than one.
Still don't understand the stab your coach in the back after one road loss to a heavily favored team mentality. Sure wouldn't want to be in the trenches with many of these fans. Being the first game of the year I forgot my own personal rule which is to keep entirely away from the board on game days!

Yes, it is ..... We are a couple years away from football 2 wins...TWO! and still it is like this. If it's any comfort, it is actually worse during Basketball season....

Yep, pretty much, but there are other times when people here get kind of pissy after a loss or failure to beat the spread.

Every fan base has a certain percentage of people who lose it after a loss. Nor Cal folk are no different so stop pretending otherwise. The only thing more annoying than the fans who overreact to a loss are the fans who go all drama queen on the overreacting fans. Stabbed the coach in the back? Wouldn't go in the trenches? A bit much I'd say. Apparently fans aren't allowed to question a coach who makes questionable moves. Instead of getting all dramatic over the three people who want a new coach you should act like the Nor Cal person you claim to be. ..Sent from my Samsung GS3..

Sadly, I've seen worse after a victory! Seriously.

Sorry, I have not patience for incessantly negative people who criticize coaches who have forgotten more about football then they will ever know combined. I have no problem with honest criticism based on knowledge, facts and statistics, but what goes on around here is far from that. Fire the coach of a program that has only had two winning years in the last twenty who went 8-5 in his first year after losing the first game on the road of the season...laughable. I've lived 20 years in Norcal and now nearly 20 years here in San Diego. There is simply no comparison with respect to the fan bases. Just look at attendance levels, the bandwagon gets jumped off faster here than anywhere else. I grew up on a town were we sold out the season for 15 years (Sacramento) with a team that rarely had a winning record. You would never see that here. Believe me I wish it was different, but its reality based on facts. Every town has is lunatic fringe they are just a higher percentage here. It wasn't so long ago many were calling for Fisher's head because he couldn't take he program to the next level..SMH.

Yes, for the past few years the coach's head is demanded for any football or basketball losses, even if the other team was favored.
...and as others have pointed out, it can be just as bad after a win if it wasn't pretty or easy enough.
...and if you read the game threads, many give up after the first quarter or first oppenent's score. Heaven forbid that we actually could come back from behind to win. ...and if we do, they will still criticize the coaches or players for not doing their best the whole game.
Rarely is any credit given to the other team or the efforts or play of our team,
Welcome to the Aztec Nation.

Oh please, look at the attendance of the bay area schools, it wasn't until they showed any kind of pulse that they started getting decent crowds. NoCal isn't any better than SoCal with respect to front running. You have to look no further than SJSU to see an example of that.
